It sends a clear signal that what is happening on the phone is more important than what is happening in the meeting.
999 times out of 1000 watching grass grow is more important than what is happening in the meeting.

Our research shows that people will still tolerate a cellphone ringing, but will not tolerate a cellphone being answered.
I don't tolerate the phone ringing. Get up, go outside and answer the call if you must, but put your phone on silent before entering the room. This is especially true of modern mobile phones that allow the use of the most annoying ringtones known to humanity.

Surely to apply some common sense doesn't apply. If you really have answer a call do so discreetly with least amount of disruption to everyone else

I don't even know what my cellphone's ringtone sounds like.

I haven't taken it off silent since I got it, it's always either in my pocket or on the table next to me. Why do some people insist on turning up their ringing volume all the way to "annoying" level? Bad news dude, everybody has a bloody cellphone these days, you're not impressing anyone!

Pocket jamming devices...

Last time someone answered a phone during class, some oke at the back screamed "hello mommy" full blast.

Um ... thank you captain obvious.

According to New York Magazine's urban etiquette guide the person in a meeting may:
- have a phone that rings in a meeting and not answer it
- have a phone that rings in a meeting and answer it
- have a phone vibrating in a meeting and not answer it
- have a phone vibrating in a meeting and answer it
- may have a phone, or not.

Depending on the circumstance.

Well ... geee. WOW. Such powers of deduction. :grr:

I switch my phone off when I don't want to be contacted, its like learning to switch off the TV: it opens up a new world thats always been there. Just like recording that episode of Smallville or Gilmore Girls on VHS, people can also record phone calls you cannot answer.

Technology is meant to help, not hinder. Don't be a slave. No ring tone has ever been funny, ever. Who buys an Etiquette guide and then follows it, word for word?
