CEO says government should scrap work-from-home rules in South Africa – and make vaccines mandatory for some

While many South African companies are legally required to allow their employees to work from home, the time has come to remove these lockdown regulations, says Busi Mavuso, Business Leadership South Africa chief executive.

There is a significant amount of high-risk individuals who are vaccine-hesitant. This makes it risky for them to return to an office.

Agreed, however...

Writing in her weekly open letter, Mavuso noted that companies have a responsibility to ensure that employees operate in a safe environment under current regulations.

With science, we now know that a "safe environment" is not possible. Even if you have a 100% fully vaccinate staff compliment, Covid-19 will still be present. Those people will still get infected. They will still book off sick for 10 days, most likely not be hospitalized, with the exception of a few breakthrough cases. They will still spread the virus in the office. This is unfortunately the reality of the matter.

My question, once again, is how will making it mandatory help the business or the economy, for that matter, by making the vaccine mandatory and forcing the whole company to return to the office? Other than creating the perfect breeding and spreading ground, even if fully vaccinated, what will this achieve?

Very valid question as one thing businesses should have taken from the past year and a half is that keeping sick people away from healthy is good for productivity.

What forcing staff back to the office will achieve, resignations.

I won't return to full-time office work as there is no justification for my role as a blended office solution is all that is needed. Companies will need to decide what is important for them. Enough opportunities for my skillset that I can decide what is important for me.
