Changes coming for domestic workers in South Africa, says Ramaphosa

Every time, guys, every time. Apparently, the reason domestic workers are suffering in 2021 is:

“This great injustice has its roots in our apartheid past, where domestic work was one of the few occupations available to black women, where conditions were particularly exploitative, and where abuse was common.”

I'll tell you what changes are coming -

If you double the minimum wage, all you will do is get half of the workers retrenched and replaced by 'illegal' alien workers who are happy to work honestly and get paid.

I would estimate 80% of the people who employ domestic workers dont need to (even CEOs can make their own beds), and they're kept on because they're essentially a part of the family.

With the economic crush that is happening, more and more domestics will loose their jobs because their employers simply cannot afford them.

You're making it worse, Cyril. I promise the market doesnt need your meddling. The minority of people exploiting their domestics are going to exploit no matter what you do or say - it's on them, not everyone else.

Maybe if banana republic didn't steal all the money they could create a few more jobs for their comrades. But sure, blame apartheid. Dumbasses.

As anyone who employs staff. Would you do that work for the wage that you pay them?

True, domestic workers must not be exploited. I pay R300 for about 3 to 4 hours work.

It is the New South Africa with its economic principles creating joblessness and an environment for exploitation. In the 80's worker's salaries was 8 times higher than Botswana and on par with the U.S., the richest country in the world.

Domestic workers are one of the employments groups that have been hardest hit by the pandemic, and thousands of women still remain unemployed, says president Cyril Ramaphosa.
Oops sorry that was me, was out of work for 2 month so I let both gardener & domestic go.
Learned I don't need them I get along just fine on my own.
Pity, but ya know times are tough we're in a pandemic.

I honestly think the solution to all of this is to do away with domestic workers being treated as employees by the homeowners and instead they should rather be absorbed into proper companies who offer cleaning services.

That way they will be covered by all labour laws etc. ... and home-owners are no longer employers, but customers.

Or they could just make domestic worker employers like any other employer, able to deduct tax for expenses etc.

So the solution to making domestic workers get re-employed is to effectively increase their cost to the employer?

Cyril, you are aware the vast majority of them were let go because people couldn't afford them after you fsckers absolutely wrecked the economy with this continued lockdown crap.

**EDIT** don't get me wrong, the idea of UIF for Domestics is good and actually needed, as well as the Compensation thing.. but these processes need to be as painless as possible for the employer as a domestic is employed largely to make a persons life easier, not more complicated in terms of dealing with incompetent government departments.

Ever used one of these companies on the regular?
A bloody nightmare.

You always get someone different and thereby cannot build a relationship of trust with the person who enters your house and stays there for hours by themselves.

I've gotten home to find my whiskey flask half empty and a very badly written note on the kitchen counter on how she didn't have time to do most of the cleaning. Turns out she got plastered and passed out on the couch.

Gave them a second chance and the new one either didn't know how to do basic stuff or was just too lazy. Place was in a worse state than before she arrived.

Tried a new company who just didn't pitch, because apparently some staff didn't bother to show up for work.

That's the problem when you give people a fixed position where their rights are more important than the rights of the people paying them. They take advantage.

Got a foreign lady now who comes twice a month. She cleans a few other houses in the street as well. Does a good job, always shows up and never any issues.

Locals can go feck themselves.
