Hi

I recently bought a used vehicle and did the licensing for it. The number plates now have to change. I've already had them made, but when trying to swop them out with the old ones I realized they have been fixed to the number plate holder with pop rivets :erm: I don't have any tools to take the rivets out. Does anyone know of a place in Cape Town that fit number plates and would be able to remove the old ones for me? Apparently it is law to either screw or pop rivet your number plates nowadays

Don't you have a drill? 6mm drill bit, touch lightly in centre hole of rivit, dont push hard, it's aluminium, then drill the head away.

Removing rivets is easy if you have a drill. Just aim a largish sized drill bit into the rivet hole and drill until the metal is exhausted around the edges of the hole. Then pull the plate off.

Iirc though that the law changed in recent years and the new plates need to be pop riveted.

Thanks for the replies. I also found this right after posting. I will have to go buy a drill or borrow one. For now I am going to try and chisel the rivet heads off with a screwdriver and a hammer :erm:

I saw a Dodge calibre over the weekend which has it's plate fitted with pop-rivets. The problem is it was extremely skew. Not just off, EXTREMELY SKEW. I was wondering... WTF would make you do that !

I've decided to have it done at VW. They charge R320. A bit much, but oh well...

Go to any number plate fitment centre. That's more or less the price I pay including removal, printing and fitting of new plates!

Although I can understand the reasoning behind this, it makes it a bit hard for new owners to replace the old number plates.

If you are male, you should own a drill.

The place you go to - Have they ever scratched your bumper behind the number plate where the holes in the number plate are? Got my car back today and there's 4 small marks behind each hole in the number plate :erm: The bumper is plastic plus you can't see the marks without pulling the number plate slightly forward so I'm wondering whether it's worth the effort and time to go back to them and ask them to fix it
