As a native to the area. It is rural, plots of about 5 acres each, completely overtaken by Daveyton today and pretty much a crime infested shîthole. It was nicer back in Charlise's day but still plenty of black people who lived and work in the area.

The real privilege was probably that she had the opportunity to travel to the US.
Its called population growth.

Maybe speak to some older black/indian people.
To clarify, I was specifically referring to the 1913 native lands act

Speaking to older people of any race won't change the wording of the act, I have read the act in its entirety and I know full well what it says.

The group areas act is a different story altogether, but for some reason that is not the one people always get worked up about, they usually go on about the 1913 act instead.

Isn't the current discourse that white people still have it better?

I thought we where discussing Charlize Theron's experiences growing up under apartheid?

Fact is that white people had it better before, during and after apartheid. Even after 25 years of discrimination post apartheid. So you can take apartheid out of the equation. Privilege came from long before apartheid. When one group's development was thousands of years ahead of the other that sense of inadequacy will linger for generations to come.

Thousands of years ahead yet insecure enough in their superiority that they had to legislate a system that marginalized an entire population group?

Done, dusted, still not understood and never will be. In the wise words of Frozen's theme song. LET IT GO!!!! LET IT GO!!! You are an american lass now... LET IT GO!!!

I am wondering how she would reflect on post apartheid SA if she was still living here and sitting without power today.

I think you have the purpose of apartheid legislation wrong. The system was designed to protect whites not marginalise blacks. The benefits of apartheid still outshone the negatives.

Just look at all the successful African countries that did not have apartheid... Oops I cannot find one

You are overthinking what she said. It is weightless. She is pandering to an industry that is making her extremely wealthy. Nothing less and nothing more. She is using their views and opinions of a history they cannot possibly understand (we don't either) to make them feel good and righteous. It endears her to them. Heck she might even be honest in her opinion. Who knows?!!? Either way it is such a volumous and complex discussion that it makes no sense to even go to the effort of mulling it over. Just leave it there. She is not a South African in any shape or form. It is just a badge of honour in some weird way.

We have bigger issues that have very little to do with our past. ESKOM for one.

I am wondering how she would reflect on post apartheid SA if she was still living here and sitting without power today.

Only if you happened to be one of the privileged few with a white skin, Jesus do you really believe this s**t?

South Africa was sitting on the some of the richest gold, diamond and platinum reserves the world had ever seen but apparently our success and wealth as a nation is all about Apartheid.... o_O

Doing it on how nice a tan someone has or how straight their hair is is stupid. But some kind of system that keep all the communist one side could probably work. Give Malema and his followers their own homeland and it's gaurenteed they will kill each other over the last scraps of food in their communist utopia.

And Zim is the bread basket of Africa and have diamonds.

We're not unique when it comes to mineral resources, lots of stuff in the ground all over the continent.

We are unique in having produced more gold than any country in recorded history...

https://www.moneymetals.com/news/2018/07/11/two-largest-gold-producing-countries-in-history-001573

28% of all gold mined has come from South Africa, the next biggest is the US at 10%.
