28% of all gold mined has come from South Africa, the next biggest is the US at 10%.

Production means you have to take it out of the ground, reserves is what's in the ground. Aus has more reserves than sa for example. Why the focus on gold, because that's what we produced most? How bout other minerals, some we have none of.

Perhaps because it's one of the most highly sought after and valuable minerals in history? Historical production illustrates how much of that mineral wealth the country actually realized, Gold sitting in the ground means bugger all if you can't extract it economically...

Ok so SA succeeded only due to gold and the rest of africa failed due to lack of gold, gotcha. Only problem is there are plenty of ex colonies outside of africa that don't have gold but they're years ahead and better off...

Never mind, I'm just gonna say you're 100% correct and stop there.

Sigh, am not sure why I expected a nuanced discussion, lesson learned.

Only if you happened to be one of the privileged few with a white skin, Jesus do you really believe this s**t?

South Africa was sitting on the some of the richest gold, diamond and platinum reserves the world had ever seen but apparently our success and wealth as a nation is all about Apartheid.... o_O
Don't believe the lies the ANC told you over the decades. Black people in SA had it much better off than black people in the rest of Africa. Why do you think we have so many Zimmers and Nigerians here? Start being honest with yourself.

Exactly. Now how much gold did SA produce before 1900

I know there is a point you are just dying to make - why not just say it instead of asking sily questions?

And when you have done that you can answer why apartheid was a needed to get that gold out of the ground..?

Apartheid wasn't needed, mining was already in production from 1867 with discovery on diamonds near orange river. SA is about 5th/6th now in gold production since my last read up

the probable truth? it wasn't strictly needed, but you need cheap labour to maximize profits, and what better way to have cheap labour than oppressing the masses?

go look at communist China or the heydays of the Soviet Union, massive achievement through cheap labour, and massive oppression to create and maintain cheap labour, apartheid was more of the same in a sense
