Hey folks,

Iv been a victim of the high priced MTN monarchs for a few years now and glad to say i have found a bit of relief in the form of 8.ta.

How to obtain your 500mb data for R60.....

Go to a Helkom store buy a 8ta starterpack(R1) rica it using your waterbill or what ever.. Buy a R50 + R10 voucher, put the sim card in your phone load the airtime, dial *180# select the add service option, select the blackberry service(i do this from a standard nokia phone), choose to activate the service, wait a few moments. Check your airtime *188# wait a few moments you will get an SMS saying you have 0mb of 480mb free.....

There is one thing to take into consideration, this data is pro-rata so every day from the 1st of the month that you activate the BIS service there is a % taken away from your total 500mb. And you have to buy multiple sim-cards...

Quick math:
MTN charge R389 for 2,0 gbyte or R289 for 1,0 gbyte
8.ta charge R60 for 500mb working out at R120 per gbyte or R240 for 2gbytes
Saving you R150 (if you can afford to topup with 2byte each time on MTN) and a lot more if u use MTN 1gbyte or 500mb

Enjoy

*****Oh and i take no responsibility for this if it works or not, you must test the water before buying 1,000 starterpacks :)

Loophole's not going to last long now...

Is this the 500MB they give you for Youtube? Does it work for anything else?

How exactly are you saving? With cellc I pay just above Rand 15 for 500MB ! (Rand 30 odd for a full gig). The "loophole" you describe, is almost 4x more expensive :D

My area is only compatible with MTN & Vodacom 3G like most of South Africa and where 8ta cant supply signal to 3G they piggyback off of MTN

Pity that you didn't post earlier, I paid R100 for 250MB this morning.

Well,in that case you have no option. I thought 8ta's special rates, only work on their network and not roaming on MTN. Either way, nice one.

How do you R15 for 500MB? I know of paying R50 for 500MB with cell c?

I bought a 60GB sim (actually 2 but that is irrelevant). I did pay R1999-00 (my cell is my modem) I bought the package in the last week of may month. For that week cellc gave me 5gig for free. The counting only started from the 1St of June. In other words, for 65gig I paid the total grand sum of 2000 Rand. The thing is I have to use 5gig every month otherwise I will loose that. Now 2000Rand / 65gig (or 66560meg) gives you 30.77Rand per gig with no other costs what so ever! That is 15.38 Rand for a half gig or 512meg. For 500meg is about 15Rand :) Further, keep in mind, the speed is about 7Mbit down and 2Mbit up. Not many have that download speed in SA (and even less the upload - which is super nice if I video chat with my family in Aus)

I also have Cell C bundles but I am often in places like Tzaneen or Grahamstown where Cell C does not work. Nor are there any 8ta towers.

But the 8ta roaming on MTN does work in both of the above places and I get excellent MTN 3G.

So 8ta roaming on MTN is the best option.

I only use Vodacom when I go to selected camps in the KNP !

Wonder why MTN can offer 3gig in Ghana @ R300 on payg and not equal it here. 3G is reasonably available (most built up areas) there so its not like it is dead slow all over. Mostly slow in rural areas of which there are unfortunately vast areas. Also I go up there once a month. I can buy a new 3g datacard and get 2.5gig data included for R300. Vodaphone offers 3gig data + datacard for R250. Unfortunately no 3g on Vodaphone yet.
