I see Hi Fi Corporation are advertising a cheap MTN E620.

They want R1649 for it. (Real Deal Total Cost). Also comes with a "Free PAYG starter pack worth R300".

How far off is this from the 'normal' price. Can this be upgraded to 3.6 SuperHSDPA?

Is this model now old - about to be replaced maybe ...

Will it work with a desktop with an adapter?

No it cant be upgraded. 1.8Mbps is the limit for all E620. When MTN and Voda upgrade there networks you will need to shell out more for a new modem.

Why not pay R450 more and get the Huawei E220 for R2100 cash. Its 3.2Mbps capable and its a USB modem so its more portable and it gets better signal because it comes with a 2m USB cable so you can move the modem where ever you get better signal. You can get it at Nashua mobile or Vodashops :) Hope it helps!

BTW: All starter packs cost +-R5. They just say R300 for starter pack because they try to make the price of the modem/phone look less than it is

Thanks.

Didn't know it can't be upgraded. I had the impression the E220 was a 'lower' version. I know the E220 cannot go beyond 3.6Mbps because it has already been upgraded.
Decisions, decisions ....:p

Just to add to Skeptik's dilemma, the E620 can take an external antenna (which blows away any signal gains due to the length of the E220's USB cable), but the E220 can't.
Seeing that the cellular networks are currently incapable of delivering anything near 1.8Mbps, the biggest factor is still one's connection to the tower, in which case the E620 coupled with a Poynting antenna is your best bet.
I still feel sorry for those who bought laptops without a PCMCIA port.
