with the (eventual) switch to digital transmission, will this free up more whitespace, allowing for better bandwidth?

Good initiative. Hopefully they will also provide Wikipedia for free.

Although,
However, the costs would increase as users consumer more bandwidth.
doesn't make sense. Surely it should get cheaper. Unless they mean total cost and not R/Mb.

It will if ICASA don't drag their feet in taking the spectrum away from Sentech once the migration to digital is complete and auctioning it off.

Wait what happened to Google's plan to use the whitespace? The sooner we move to digital TV the sooner we there will be more white space available.

A similar TVWS trial from WAPA, Google, TENET, e-Schools Network, and Meraka/CSIR was launched in Cape Town and showed promising results.

The trial showed conclusively that TV white space can effectively be used to deliver broadband. Now it's up to the regulator to follow the lead of other countries and introduce the legislation to enable commercial use.
