Cheaper DStv HD PVR decoder launched

I have a cheap LG HDD/DVD recorder but might want to get one of these DStv ones. Can some please tell me :

1) How do you get recorded stuff off a PVR (like on DVD or USB) and what format is it exported in ?
2) Are all the SD channels that the HD PVR show true widescreen pictures or do they have black bars around them ?

1) You can't... not allowed officially. If you buy some hardware that bypasses HDCP and willing to go through the effort you can find a way - but not worth it in my opinion.
2) No, SD that is broadcast in 4:3 stays like that, even on the 2 HD PVR decoders.

Having said that, it's not all bad, I couldn't handle going back to only SD content - I *need* to watch at least 75% of my stuff in HD.

Still the SD PVR decoder is much better than both HD decoders... 2 channels + recording...

Exactly, I still own a SD PVR, runs like a dream and can control or change the 2 DSTV channels from any of the 5 TVs in my home remotely (no need for remote-blaster). So, I can view any 2 channels at the same time and record a 3rd. With new HD decoders one have to get ExtendedView, another decorder and a lot more wiring to have the same functionality - they are going backwards

My problem with this is that I dont want a PVR at all.
I just want to watch the HD channels in HD. But it's ok now. Badnwidth has become affordable enough so that I can choose what I watch when I watch and at what quality.

Well get this HD PVR, its not PVR enabled yet, so you have a HD decoder. Done

R 1999 is a special? I'm sure I saw regular HD PVR decoders for R 1999 at one stage.

What?

R1999 is the standard price. The lowest I've ever seen the others for was R2 200 at Makro a month after launch, Sep 2008, they generally R2999

Totally agree with you in this regard. I still consider it a downgrade to get the HD PVR.

How do you control the other three TV's without a remote blaster...?

Damn.... I literally was taking my credit card out my wallet.

A PVR that can't PVR..... new depths of stupidity for Multichoice.

EDIT: Ok it's only the Series function and on-demand that are missing.

Hey I love this! I have had an HD PVR for two years and it's the greatest bugbear of my life! I also want to transfer some things from the HDD to DVD but can't - due to some idiotic licensing agreement between MultiChoice and the broadcast channel operators. It's insane! We could do as we pleased with SABC programs. I'm waiting for a PC AGP or similar or monitor card that supports digital satellite transmissions and then I can record directly to my computer, then I can edit the video and do with it as I please. There are some really great programmes available on DStv. I have even thought about connecting the existing Ethernet jack to my network to see what happens ... probably nothing as this feature is probably disabled. They sure know how to screw us! My subscription is now nearly R630 a month - it's way over the top! Unfortunately TopTV doesn't provide the channels I like and the next offering isn't off the ground yet.

Wait a second

So:

1) You can only watch 1 Channel (and record another) - So that doesn't help if i'm trying to replace my SD PVR
2) Is the current dual LNB used for SD PVR compatible with this new HD PVR? (i.e. i can just switch the SD PVR cables with the HD PVR cables and it will work without having to re-align etc?)

Then don't replace the SDPVR, use it with this decoder on Xtraview
Yes, same thing. It will work. Or get a 2x4 multiswitch & then connect up both

I have a Active Powered splitter to the other TV's which enable them to send a signal back to the decoder using a TV Eye - which plugs into the aerial at the back of the remote TV's - best invention ever. Go to http://www.dstv.com/dstvsa/content/en/dstvsa/installation_options and download the Technical Manual if you require more info - but I suggest getting an expert to do the installation. Our decoder is downstairs and our daughter can control one DSTV channel and I the other remotely from different TV's upstairs, miles away from the decoder - using normal DSTV remotes. We can both set recordings as long as there are no time conflicts.

So which retailers have these and at what prices (I know RRP is R1999 but maybe some are running specials)? Nothing on Makro or Game's website.

R2000 for a decoder? My biggest problem is that it's over priced, I can afford it, but really... is it worth it at that cost plus additional R600 a month even though I only want 3 channels that they wont make available in any cheaper packages. DSTV is just a loose loose situation for me :)

The SD decoders cost R600? I see no reason why the price should be R2000 for an hd one.
I think maybe they are just holding out on bringing out the cheaper ones, get all us early adopters to feed them.

FAIL ! My cheap LG HDD/DVD recorder kicks this DStv PVR square in the SCART plug!

It can record and playback from DVD or HDD, copy between DVD and HDD, play DivX/MPEG4-ASP files and it upscales everything to 1080p for my 48" LCD.

DStv is so weak I downgraded to Select 2 and that is only because I watch Binnelanders. Had it not been for that I would cancel it altogether. Now they come with this "cheaper HD PVR" ?! What a load of dodged up crap.

Stuff you Monochoice, go suck your hat !

Dude. Read the press release, it is a full on PVR, can record 1 channel while watching another, and it has all the FFWD and RWND and Pause functionality. Just the DSTV on demand and Series recording tweaks are not enabled yet.

I'm not defending MC, but for me the reason why I moved away from my DVDR is because of the full integration that MC's PVR offers to the TV Guide. Setting time based recordings and auto-tunes to use a DVDR is a pain! Plus, the fact that it's HD and has 4 tuners (I've got the original HD PVR) is brilliant. I can live with the bugs.

+1

I currently have to do that and end up hardly setting any recordings because it's just too much of a lus!

The ease of scheduling recording is a huge benefit of MC's PVR's IMO.

Xtraview:
"The system requires newer decoder versions to function – 1110 or later – and unfortunately older decoder models (Pre-1110 and PVR) and not capable of supporting the service"

Is this true?

DStv actually messes up the autotune feature so that you miss the first 3 minutes of a program. This is to force people like me to buy their UEC made trashomaticorder, all I do is autotune the program before the one I want to record. I think I'm gonna start to upload the binnelanders omnibus as torrents just to help other people get off DStv and also to get back at Monochoice for being so un-freetard.
