Cheaper way to hook a A1110 DSD to a HDMI enabled screen

Current I've got an old 54cm CRT TV hooked up to my primary A1110 decoder. I would like to upgrade it with the 24" HDMI enabled Samsung LCD on sale at Dionwired at the moment (I've already bought one for my PC and am very impressed with it)

I'm looking for the cheapest way to go from the composite output on the decoder to the HDMI input on the screen? I know you get DVD player/Home theater kits which output to HDMI but does anyone know of one that has an additional auxiliary input on both video and audio?

Mmmmm... I think you're in for an uphill struggle. My Sony receiver has a plethora of extra in- and outputs, BUT it doesn't do any switching between them. In other words, any composite input will only be available on the composite output - same for component & HDMI.

Is there anyone on the forum using one of these and will it work if I connect my SD PVR to it. In other words will it upscale to 720p. Thanks

Any tried this at all, using a RGA to HDMI converter to get HD on TV?

I know some people will disagree with me, but upscaling does not dramatically improve the quality of the image. It only changes the standard that you use to connect. This means that you can have 1 HDMI cable running to a screen, with a switcher and upscaler playing everything through that one cable. What you put in is what you get out though, so even if composite is upscaled to 720p it will still look a lot like composite. You can't magically create extra information.

Why would you want to use one of these converters then?

Ah Ok now I think I understand :), you connect everything to the switcher and then just run that one HDMI cable to the screen, but will not improve picture quality only limit number of cables running to screen!

The old adage applies very well here; "Garbage in- Garbage out".

One option with your current decoder is to splurge on an av receiver that accepts the analogue signal, converts it to digitial, deinterlaces the signal and then up-scales it to your panels native resolution: Receiver needs at least a decent upscaling chip so Faroudja DCDI, found on the Sony 2008/09 ES receivers for R6k and up or if you step up to the Denon or Yamaha high end receivers there is an excellent Scaling chip made by Anchor Bay - look for ABT 2010 chipset in these receivers - it will clean up the image, allow precise DNR adjustments for getting rid of macro-blocking,mosquito noise etc. TO AN EXTENT.
However, you are looking at upwards of spending 20k to help you out on a decoder that costs R400!

Rather save a bit longer and get the HDPVR along with your new TV/Monitor - money better spent!
