Most affordable hybrids in South Africa

The ten most affordable hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in South Africa in early 2024 have prices ranging from under R500,000 to just over R1 million.

2023 was a big year for hybrid sales in South Africa, with 6,726 new models registered by car buyers, an increase of 61% over the previous year.

Affordable? Once Hybrids or EV's drop to around R200k that is what would be considered affordable imho.
Possibly putting my neck on the block here but that will never happen.

A Sub R200k EV car for SA, note "car" in the traditional sense not that Bajaj Qute et al schit.

That would be great but you can't even get a decent ICE car for that much.

A family car is R350k + so I think once they dip to around R400k it will be worth it.

You can't even buy a Picanto for R200k anymore. At this rate normal, working class, people are going to be priced out of the new car market within a few years.
Yep. Granted everything is getting more expensive, but above R300k is not affordable imho. For a family, assuming you've got two partners paying for one car, maybe. But a lot of people (and this number is growing) are remaining single. Wouldn't be surprised if that increasing number and eventual self driving / much much cheaper app-taxis will be the majority of road traffic, obviously first over seas, and then eventually in SA.

That's if we survive the sanctions.

Lovely fuel consumption however this comes with a price that is not affordable.

Government is greedy in this regard too.
I dont know what import taxes and duties are, though I'd think they are high. Or should I say, could definitely be lower.
Premium brand cars are getting out of hand price wise too,.
Plus being environmentally conscientious is not on our governments to do list either. There is no real desire to motivate people into more efficient and cleaner cars.
The CO2 tax is also a laugh. Anyone buying car couldnt care less about a Co2 tax and it certainly doesnt stop anyone from buying any car.
It's simply money for the government to waste elsewhere while we pump out untold quantities of pollutants from all the coal power stations.
Saying all that... Come on Honda! Bring the damn Civic eHev here!

Just buy a helmet and catch a lift with a Checkers Sixty60 delivery guy.
