Hi guys :)

Hope you guys have a good weekend so far.

I'm looking for a cheap solution to keep my Desktop PC and monitor on during a power failure.

I don't have much cash right now, so I don't want the UPS route.

Is there anything else available which you are aware of, or will a UPS be my only option?

I just need to power off the PC during a power failure. I don't need to keep it on.

something like this

there is a slightly bigger model also depending on your power requirements
Thanks.

I was actually hoping for a small power source solution that would do the same thing.

I'll google a bit more and see, otherwise I'll get a UPS in future.

But a UPS is a power source solution?

It just has the benefit of also turning off the PC for you when you aren’t around.

the biggest problem is you need 220V AC, so i don't think you will find a significantly cheaper solution to be honest. it is likely you could find an old one on various classifieds, chances are you could just swap the battery in it and it will be good as new

@tera when you get the UPS just remember these things are not meant to run the PC forever and as such you don’t want to deplete the battery below 50% regularly.

I've worked with enterprise UPS systems.
Large mofos like a generator.
I knows what a UPS is :p
I've had personal ones in the past. Yonks ago.

I'm used to my laptop, haven't had a proper Desktop for ages. I have one now, but don't want to invest much into it.

Now with massive power cuts at my new place I was thinking of getting a fix for it.
If the only route is a proper UPS then I'd have to save for one. Money is tight right now.

Thanks guys for being here for my weird questions :D

So why not skip it all together.

Setup a cron job with the Load Shedding schedule to automatically turn off the machine 5 minutes in advance.

That’s what I used to do before using a UPS.

It's not just load shedding.
It's various cuts during the day at random intervals.
This is a small town near the KNP.
Power cuts here is like water flowing. It just happens.
I'll have to get a UPS. I'm typing this reply where the power went out a while ago.
Probably the 5th cut today.

Bought myself a Eaton 650AV UPS for like R750 earlier this year. Windows 10 sees it via USB cable, I have set it to hibernate after 1 minute of running on battery power. Screen not on UPS, just the PC.

Thanks for the suggestion.
That would definitely be what I'd look for in a UPS.
Time to save some cash....
