Two 160w 12v panels in parallel, works pretty damn good. Especially if we've got extended downtime due to non loadshedding related power problems.
ah cool - thanks. Im thinking of getting the Mever 330w panel. That should be ok I think. But will have to replace battery with a lithium one as well

Apparently FNB/WESBANK are now going to be financing solar systems..
Wonder how it will compare to the existing competition.

I looked at the financing through Versofy but it's not a great deal for my situation, the actual equipment cost is higher to begin with then you still include the interest it becomes very expensive. It's definitely an option if you just don't have that kind of money available and you can always pay it off sooner.

A lot of those old chest freezers if the seals are fine can last a long time, our old one was unplugged for about 3 days without us realising, it was only when I was standing near it and realised it was humming like it used to that I noticed it wasn't plugged in.

If it's not humming, that means the corpses are dead for sure.

Jokes aside, yeah they can go a long time without power.

So I have one of the Mecer units, shown in this article. It is working well so far, carries my 58" LED, Yamaha home theater system and subwoofer and some lamps for 4 hours, with 48% left.

Fair enough, I won't use the sub when I'm on battery, but it was a test. Recharge time is very very fast, and the unit runs fairly quietly. It sounds like a standard desktop PC, and is about the same size as well.

Had the TV, amp, and fan on for 2 hours, battery was at 71%. So it seems to easily carry the load through a loadshedding slot with loads to spare.

I do have a question, if anyone else has this one or a similar unit (Kool Energy looks like the same thing).

Occasionally, perhaps once every 2 or 3 hours (sometimes even longer), it gives 3 quick beeps. I have sat next to the unit to check for error LEDs or messages, but there are none and it doesn't seem to affect its operation.

The buzzer is disabled, so I don't know what the meaning of it might be. It's not a bother, but perhaps if it means something, I could avoid future trouble.

If you have normal LA batteries, be prepared to replace them soon.
