Shoprite K'Nect and Afrihost Air Mobile destroy Vodacom and MTN

South Africans looking for the cheapest prepaid mobile data should avoid the major players and consider one of several smaller mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).

That is based on MyBroadband's comprehensive comparison of prices for prepaid data bundles with a validity of 30 days or longer.

Would really appreciate a real speed test on the mvnos.
Are they really held back? Is it all the time? Is it just slower or unusably slow at some times.

I have airmobile and definitely have times it's unusable, but presume it's my phone or signal (has 3-4 bars 4G though)... If it's airmobile itself, then I guess I could change...

I use both Airmobile and FNB connect, but I have found Airmobile to be significantly faster and more stable than FNB connect.

anything that runs on cell c's network is horse sh_t as far as data goes, at least from my experience with fnb connect and cell c.

i keep fnb connect for the free voice allocation and i use afrihost for data - airmobile is excellent

I'm currently getting 6GB data from Vodacom for R159 so seems some specials are missing.

I have Airmobile. Very stable and see up to 109mbs download speed often. Normally averages 45mbs.

Is there a limit on the number of months one may claim the free data for, I've read previously 3 months, then one has to purchase a bundle to keep the free 1gb promo running. Or has it changed now to 1gb free per month indefinitely, without any condition of purchasing

Free every month no need to buy any bundles anymore. Data is valid for 60 days and we changed the expiry of transferred data. Now if you transfer data to a friend/family member before it expires it's extended to the end of the following month.

We are aware of an issue that might cause slower than usual speeds during the office hour peak and evening peak. We are working with MTN on the issue.
