Also the idea of them fiddling with factory wiring also doesn't gel well with me.

Only reason I have a tracker is if, god forbid, my wife or kids are hijacked there will be some hope of tracing the car. Have tracker Skytrax. Never had any issues.

Same here. At R250/month it's actually got a spin-off benefit. I pick up my wife after work every day, and she can sms Skytrax and request my vehicle's position. The result is that if I'm held up in traffic she's not waiting (unsafe) outside her work, but she's at the door ready to go when I arrive. Worth it!

I do not like tracking devices for a whole lot of other reasons. One such reason is banks, PI's and debtors who always have connections in these companies and can track your locations and whereabouts by simply making a call to a friend.

That being said, I know that netstar has an entry level device, where you need to call in if your car is stolen and you can purchase this option at a price of 3k for 3 years.

Not speaking about APIs, but rather staff members working in senior positions who have access to the information.

That would be unethical. Working in this very industry I am forced to take ethical training and tests on a yearly basis. I am pretty sure people higher up than me faces a lot more risk from misuse of such information.
