Watch as a recalled Chevy Bolt bursts into flames in a parking lot overnight - Mashable

The battery fire destroyed the Bolt EV, and damaged a nearby Maserati and Hyundai.

New footage of a burning Bolt EV added more fuel to Chevy's raging battery fire saga this week.

Early Monday morning, 20-year-old Jesus Damian's 2017 Bolt EV burst into flames while sitting in a parking lot near his apartment in Sacramento, California.

The all-electric vehicle was unplugged and off when the fire broke out. The fireball comes after Chevy expanded its recall of Bolts to include every model year earlier this month.

The initial recall in November occurred after several reports of battery fires. GM blames battery-maker LG for manufacturing defects.

GM Might Buy Back Your Potentially-Fiery Chevy Bolt - Jalopnik

The automaker has recalled every Bolt and Bolt EUV worldwide and is doing buybacks on a "case by case" basis.

GM has been having a time of it lately with the Chevy Bolt, issuing recall and then recall because of potential fire due to its batteries.

Its current advice is for owners to park their Bolts outdoors, which according to a new report, has some of them hopping mad and demanding a buyback.

The Detroit Free Press says that, in some cases, Bolt owners have been successful in getting buybacks from GM. The Freep talked to multiple Bolt owners, who are in various stages of mad.

My favorite is that of Durham Smith, a South Carolina man who is engaged in a high-stakes showdown with GM and his local dealership.

Smith, 74, is determined to get a buyback. He said he refuses to pay on the vehicle, he is considering contacting a lawyer and he might run a full-page ad in his local newspaper telling his story.

On Aug. 5, Smith and his wife, Cyndie, bought a 2022 Bolt EUV — the all-new compact electric SUV — for about $40,000. The couple wanted to be environmentally conscious, plus it was fun to drive and, “I loved the car, it was just wonderful,” Cyndie said.

But on Aug. 20, their new vehicle was part of GM’s recall. Four days later, Smith returned the vehicle to the dealership, hoping to exchange it for a Buick Envision SUV, he said.

But the dealership offered them $29,900 for it and the Envision was $39,900, Smith said.

Frustrated, Smith decided rather than park the Bolt on his tree-lined driveway or in his garage, he left the Bolt, with the keys in it, at the dealership and called a taxi to take him home.

His first payment for it is approaching and the car remains at the dealership.

“I am looking at a couple of options, none of which are paying on it because I feel that would be to acquiesce and it’d be an admission of ownership,” Smith said. “I see it as unethical on General Motors’ part to leave the car on the market.”

Smith has submitted all required paperwork to the automaker seeking a buyback, he said, and now he waits for a response.

A lifelong GM customer, Smith said if GM and LG figure out a fix, he will still likely want a buyback because “GM’s actions thus far have done nothing to instil confidence in either their capacity to fix the problem nor in any veracity in a statement about having done so.”

A full-page ad in his local newspaper! Parking the car at the dealer and taking a taxi home! Lifelong GM customer! I love all of it.

Another recalled Chevy Bolt parked indoors catches fire in Georgia - Autoblog

A vivid reminder why GM and NHTSA say park outside until the batteries are fixed

1631716263787.png

Regrettably, a 2019 Chevrolet Bolt owner in Cherokee County, Georgia, gained an intimate understanding of why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and GM recommend parking and charging your Bolt outside.

We don't have many details, but via Inside EVs, the Cherokee County fire and emergency services got a call to respond to a home fire just after 9 a.m.

The resident told the firefighters his smoke alarms started going off, and he traced the source to a 2019 Bolt parked in an adjoining garage.

Firefighters doused the fire and got the car out of the garage, rescuing the situation soon enough so that the only secondary fallout was to a Dodge Ram parked alongside that "received some smoke damage."

The Bolt, however, was toast — another EV sacrificed to battery chemistry and rare defects.

So far no one has died in any of these spontaneous combustions, but two people reported smoke inhalation and one house went down in a blaze.

If you own a Bolt, do yourself and your loved ones a huge favour and park that puppy outside.

It's like the guys who held onto their Samsung Note 7's, charging them in pots in the sink and **** to prevent the fires.

Just posting the sources for my statement.

Interesting link. Sounds like a non-viable design and manufacturing process. If you can't QA guarantee a battery with less than one in a million chance of catching fire, you shouldn't be producing it...

GM Has Fix For Bolt Battery Fires, Not All Packs Will Be Replaced - Motor1.com

New diagnostic software will help identify batteries needing to be fixed.

Late last month, General Motors voluntarily recalled every Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle ever made because of a potential battery defect that could cause a fire. The automaker issued guidelines on safely operating the EV while it sought a fix, which it has now found.

The automaker announced today its plan to fix the Bolt and Bolt EUV batteries, which includes replacing modules in some vehicles while installing software in others

The announcement arrives alongside news that LG battery plants have resumed production, with new, fixed battery modules expected to begin shipping to dealers as soon as mid-October, according to the company's press release.

However, not every Bolt will get a new pack. The automaker plans to only replace all the modules in 2017 to 2019 models, according to Automotive News. Those built from 2020 to 2022 will only have their batteries replaced if they're determined to be defective.

The new packs will come with an 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty.
