Templating has really proven to be the bane of creativity...

Well according to this...

http://www.coordinated.co.za/press-release-01.php

... it would appear that Coordinated TECHnologies designed the template. It's possible DeCap obtained permission to use the template. If not then I'm sure Coordinated TECHnologies would love to know their material is now also the copyright of DeCap [;)]

This is only a guess, but it seems that template is some kind of pre-fab for IT-ish company web sites.

I do so hate those... I design huge dynamic content driven sites with all kinds of built in processing (think Pastel Accounting Suite, but in a web site) and massive user interfaces. Yet, almost always, after my many months of hard work, the clients will bitch and refuse to sign off on a project because it isn't "visually impressive" enough.

Then, they will tell me to go an have a look at the site of "competitor X", I should see how their designer has made use of graphics, yadda yadda

The "competitor X" site is always some kind of Dreamweaver or MS FrontPage pre-fab template, or a pre-fab (usually downloaded for free) from a third party. Some of the more impressive ones actually pay for the templates too (there are web sites that sell them by the thousand.)

Of course, my clients never see that you can't really log in to the very visually impressive site, or that to sign up, you are invited to send an e-mail to signup@some****tycompanydomain.com, no, they just see how very visually impressive the other site is.

I sometimes wonder why I bother going out of my way to design nice web based applications that take months of hard slog and dedication, if I could just have spent 2 hours typing the client's details into a template and ask every visitor to send an e-mail to joeaverage@publicbog.org...

I agree with you there, but the big issue is $$$, you can get a free to $20 templte that looks great or hire some one who will charge a min of about R3000. So feasiblity is a huge aspect i think.

Got to agree with podo here, but at what cost........

It's all good and well developing a site that has massive functionality and is totally DB driven, but these things are seriously expensive.....

On the other hand, a template sort of kills most of the cost of initial development. (or say a choice of about 20 templates)

Must admit that decap is the first one I've come across using the same template.......
It's not a huge problem for me that my site looks relatively similar to another one.

Well, I do agree that templates are very useful if all your client needs is a site with an overview of their products and services and maybe, some contact details.

The gripe I had is that one particular client actually hired me specifically to write him a huge DB driven site, to sell services on-lin. It's not launched yet and I am bound by an NDA, so I can't tell you what it does, yet, but I can tell you it has a massive database back-end with three enormously complex user interfaces, for three different kinds of users.

After looking at last month's development snapshot, the client sent me an e-mail complaining that somebody else had opened a "similar" site, wanting to know why I was taking so long and why mine doesn't "look like THAT?"

The other site is the standard "drop-em-in" content-between-nice-graphics one-pager. The company do plan on offering the same services as the client, except that they have no online user interface, in fact, they don't even have any forms on the page, they just invite everybody who wants to join their "online service" to send them an e-mail...

Tsk tsk...

Yeah does seem ironic how two .co.za domains end up with an identical look & feel....

1500 bucks would buy you a totally unique and VERY good design. contact me or leave a message here, I know a couple of underpaid graphic artists (who should be amoung the top guys in the country) that would love to have a part time jobbie thrown to them

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?
