China reportedly hijacking Internet traffic to spy on Western countries

Researchers at the U.S. Naval War College and Tel Aviv University have found evidence to suggest that China Telecom is using Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to hijack Internet traffic and route it through computers under its control, Sophos reported.

While it is usually difficult to prove that such an attack is anything more than an accident, such as a misconfigured router, the researchers said that their special route-tracing system hosted at the University of Tel Aviv is capable of detecting unusual patterns in BGP announcements.

I have Chinese friends/business associates.
they constantly rave about the "safety aspect" in Chinese cities.
cameras everywhere, street cops without guns, unlocked cars that don't get stolen, go for walks at 3AM and get home safe.

I then constantly remind them of Benjamin Franklin who said: "Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

This usually leads to them ordering drinks all round & changing the subject.

I wonder how long before they realize I get free drinks when they talk politics.

Wish Ben had lived to visit SA where you permanently surrender your safety in return for nothing.
