This month China celebrates 70 years of communist rule. Did the communists pull themselves out of the "dark ages"?
It's more a thing of them taking measures to liberalize much of the economy and creating special economic zones, government itself stayed communist for the most part. It was the force of the market combined with good old fashioned economic thuggery that pulled them out. You don't actually HAVE to be communist in all ways to still be communist, it's extremely inefficient to be politically communist but with enough luck and willpower it can work to a point.

Well politically they don't fit the old classical definition of a communist country. The country is a 1 party dictatorship, governed by a quasi/limited democratically elected general secretary (democratically as there is voting in the higher level sections of the party, but limited as it only involves that higher section instead of a national election), but the country practices a strong capitalist approach to economics and business.
