Chiropractor or similar for rib injuries?

Hi guys,

I wonder if I can get your advice on something, as I find this subforum very helpful.

Do any of you guys know of a chiropractor in the Johannesburg and surrounds area who works with rib injuries? A few months back I "dented" in a few ribs when I was carrying something heavy and then fell back with it on top of me. The ribs sort of dislocated inwards slightly from the cartilage. Went to a doc who gave me painkillers, etc. The pain and so on has long subsided, but I'm still left with a slight "dent" there where the ribs haven't quite lined up and healed with the cartilage. Do any of you perhaps know of someone who's worked with you or someone you know on a similar type of issue to pop the ribs back into alignment?

Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Dont go to a chiropractor, playing around with ribs like that is not something you should do, especially with a quack chiropractor. Go back to the doctor and get his advice if you're concerned about the dent.

Go see someone who is more qualified. IE, a Medical Officer that has specialized. (You would call a MO a GP). Though you might need to see the GP for a referral first.

While chiropractors are a little more regulated in SA than most other countries (they have a very basic education on the human body) they are not qualified medical officers and are not like all other mainstream medical industries where you become a MO and then specialize. So for that reason I would be cautious to use them.

I have 3 broken ribs from a Bike accident. Also has a slight indentation but only noticeable when you really look for it or know about it. Why does it bother you? That is the way it healed. Doubt it can be fixed without surgery and having them broken and re-aligned again.

Hi, guys. Thanks. @Unhappy and Ghoti, it was actually the doctor I went to who recommended a chiropractor. I contacted him a few days back again to say it hadn't healed right -- though he said it would -- and he said to see a chiropractor. I can tell he's a bit lost about what to do about this problem though. Thanks, Ghoti, for your thoughts. I'll think about it.

@Pitbull Thanks. It's not too, too hectic, but it is pretty noticeable in my case. It's kind of bothering me. I've stopped working out because of it, don't like how it looks, not happy with it.

Yeah that doesn't sound like a very dependable doctor, i would try go to another one and get their advice or at least see if they can refer you to a specialist like Ghoti said.

Sorry to hear that man. Be prepared to have very painful surgery to have it fixed :(
Mine is on the front side about 10cm from the celiac plexus and down about 2 cm's from there. See if I can find a picture of a rib cage somewhere and I'll show you :p You won't notice it on a photo if I took it on my phone.

Thanks, Unhappy, Ghoti and OrbitalDawn. Yeah, I'll definitely take on board what you guys have said. I didn't really complain though when he mentioned chiropractic, because surgery is the absolute last option I'd want to take -- and probably an option I won't take -- and it seemed like the only other thing he was leaning towards besides chiropractic.

Thanks, Pitbull, for the image. Ja, mine is somewhere around there too. I'd say 6, 7, 8, and also pretty much exactly where the numbers are marked on that pic. It's not lekker. It doesn't show up too much on a pic for me too, but is noticeable to the naked eye. Surgery is the last thing I'd go for though, like I said, and I'll probably just los it and live with this thing if it's the only option. I'm open to exploring some other things first and I'll see how it goes.

Maybe go to a physio, or if you don't come right there an orthopaedic specialist.

Thanks. Yeah, I did think about trying a physio or someone who does sports medicine. Will keep it mind. Thanks.

Inject 10cc's of morphine into a vein in your arm. If the pain returns after that wears off, repeat.

Go see a doctor if there is pain the next day.
