Hey Guys

Finally got over the desire to buy a Blackberry. Looking for an Android phone in the R135 price range. I say R135 because Vodacom has the Samsung I9001 Galaxy S Plus for R135 a month. In that price range, its the best phone I can find. 1.4Ghz CPU and 512MB RAM. Sounds tasty. Any other ideas for phones ? Do you think the prices will come down in the month of Feb (Its my birthday present :D)

Cheers

I just signed for a Galaxy S (1) with MTN. Anyone know how many days I have to cancel? As far as I know it's 5, but I'm hoping for 7.:)

Yes. It's a 1.4GHz newer processor vs 1GHz (+ 1 year later released so GPU must be better too), better HSDPA etc speed and R30 cheaper than what I'm paying. Although that said VC usually charge more than what's written on the box. My R135 contract with them was never below R165 (pre-CPA). And with MTN it's a Topup so no surprises.

Avoid those old Galaxy S models!!!

Rather get the SE XPERIA Arc S. It has a 1.4GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 4.3inch LED display at 854x480, gorgeous design, an excellent 8MP Camera, beautiful UI, Android2.3.4 and Sony have confirmed it will get the Android4.0 ICS Update.

http://gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_arc_s-4134.php

Thanks for that option. Whats the prices like ? I asked for around R135 a month... I compared the Galaxy S and the SE Xperia (Just noticed that if you put those two together it becomes SEXperia :D) on GsmArena... Disregarding physical features : They have the same processor, RAM and GPU. The Xperia has lower Internal memory (320MB Vs 8/16GB). The Xperia has a better camera+features and software. HDMI port, blah blah.. problem is.. checking on Helkom.. its R135 a month, but theres a R2599 pay in for the phone. Not paying that much. :( Any cheaper deals ?

The GPU is actually a slower model. :( Not sure about specifics... but many reviews and comparisons between the S and S+ say that its a slower GPU in the S+.

Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance goes official, confirms rumors

Samsung just introduced the latest dual-core addition to their lineup of Android smartphones. Dubbed Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance, the new handset promises to become the most affordable dual-core smartphone by the Korean company.

Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance is built around a 4" Super AMOLED, which is the unit we came to know from the I9000 Galaxy S. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread-running smartphone sports a 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, 768 MB of RAM and 8GB or 16GB of internal storage.

The Galaxy S Advance main snapper can capture 5 megapixel stills and 720p videos. There's also a 1.3 megapixel front-facing snapper for video calls and chats on board.

As is to be expected from a modern-day smartphones, connectivity is quite well covered. The Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance comes with support for 14.4 Mbps HSPA, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, A-GPS, Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 2.0. There's no 4G radio support, but given the mid-range targeting of the device that was to be expected.

Samsung is yet to provide pricing details or release time frame for the Galaxy S Advance, but we guess it will only take a month or two for this one to hit the shelves, and it should cost about as much as the Galaxy R.

Samsung Galaxy S Plus vs S Advance specs

These guys must hate creating new models ! Guess its a clever business plan. Can't get an S2 ? Get an R. Can't get an R ? Get a S Plus advance. Can't get that ? Get an S+. For comparision sake... whats the price of the galaxy R ? (So I'll know what the S+ Advanced will cost when it drops here) Doubt I'm going to be waiting for this.

Thanks for pointing out the Samsung S Plus, I was also looking at around this price range as well, actually <= R 150. I was impressed with the Xperia Ray, cheaper than the Arc S but still very good specs. The Samsung does have a faster CPU and seems to have better software and screen, the Ray has (much) better looks and a better camera. I read up a bit more about the Ray and 2 things worry me, firstly the supposed dead zones on the touchscreen and easily scratchable screen - the scratch resistant glass is not all that scratch resistant.

Samsung head, Ray heart, decisions...

I'll gladly take any letter from the Samsung alphabet with Android now.:) After the Omnia i900 (with Windows Mo-vile 6.1 ) it took a lot (mybb comments amongst others) to convince me to take the Galaxy S. After 7 days of testing remote desktop, Wordpress, office apps, SSH etc etc, I'm sold on Samsung - excellent phone.
All I now need is a good GPS navigation app (nothing compare to Nokia/Ovi Maps). Instead of paying R600 for a GPS license, I'll rather use my trusty Nokia 2710 Navigator (R750 last year) when on the road.

Edit: forgot to say, my contract have penalty payments costing thousands to cancel...so I guess I'm "stuck" with the awesome SGS...

Navigation
* Navfree Open street map generated offline navigation - needs to be online when searching new addresses.
* Sygic Total offline navigation
CoPilot South Africa Total Offline navigation
Route 66 Offline navigation
Waze Community GPS navigation (Thanx to DWPTA for admission)

From http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/397329-Android-useful-app-catalogue

I would Highly recommend Sygic SA Maps was R320, Route 66 also have a 30 Day trail on right now to see if you like it.

I saw that thread (and the blog) and was weary of the cost involved. Route 66 was on my 6110 Navigator and was very good, so will try it.
Hope Sygic have a trial too. Will check, thanks.

Unfortunately I dont think Sygic has one, well it didn't when I bought it but the lifetime(Of the device) free updates of TomTom based maps was cheaper than the update on my Garmin so was an easy decision to make. When I buy a new phone my Desire HD will become my new permanent in car GPS.

That's the same idea I had. I bought Co Pilot and have no complaints.

My only complaint with Co-Pilot was that it worked fine on my Galaxy S, but it does not work at all on my Optimus Black. And their support is TERRIBLE!
