Bad news for Ster-Kinekor — and other cinemas in South Africa

Ster-Kinekor is slashing jobs and closing cinemas in South Africa because of the country’s struggling economy. This is out of sync with global trends, where cinemas are growing.

Last month, Ster-Kinekor announced plans to retrench 236 employees in a restructuring effort in the face of declining attendance numbers.

Who wants to go to a cinema with risk of having the movie shut down half way while watching. Getting a refund for another time is pointless. You have wasted your time and spoilt the experience

They also scewed up that half price thing for monthly subscription they had going on. Basically made it unaffordable for the guy who watches once a year and brings his family as standard ticket prices are too expensive.

Main reason for me not going to the movies is:

PRICE - not just of the tickets but also the ****ing snacks. You want to make it more attractive, let people bring in their own snacks.

They should ban all snacks. The crunching and open-mouthed slopcorn chewing and Coke slurping is what made me quit cinemas a while back.

Have been bringing in our own (soft) snacks since the dawn of time, but even then it is crazy expensive for a family outing. It has now been years since the last time we went

Come to Europe, the politeness is insane.

No phones, no talking in the show with the occasional laughter being the only exception. Kids behaved, no parents having having to ssssh them. And the kicker, the place is spotless. Everybody cleans up their own popcorn .etc mess while leaving the cinema. No staff clean between the shows.

/my mind recently blown to experience this.
