Cinema not going down without a fight

Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro might be facing an uphill battle, but the cinema operators maintain they still have plenty to offer South Africans.

The increasing number of streaming services becoming available in South Africa might signify the start of a transition period for how we consume entertainment.

I hate going to cinemas.
You have people that are inconsiderate, they make noise, they are loud, rude, disgusting.
People ****ing suck.
Prices are ridiculous. Food and drinks are insanely priced.
It's just an overall **** experience.
And to be honest the quality of the screens are not great.
Nothing beats watching at home.

Not sure in what universe a home TV screen beats cinema. Maybe if you have home cinema screen but no way a TV beats cinema even non IMAX. It is of course not for the antisocial.

Don't know about you, but watching in 4k on my 65-inch TV, with my surround sound system, you and I are still watching the exact same movie. Not as if you are watching one version and I another. The black jeans the actor wears in the cine, is still the black jeans I saw on my TV. Same for the red car they drove in the cine, the car is still red on my TV. Only difference, I get to watch it free of charge and you spent a chunk of your salary.

Maybe if cinemas can get the basics right I might reconsider spending my money there again. Like getting the projector in focus. Or sound that's too loud that they cause the speakers to distort.

Don't know what cinemas you guys go to, but when I go it's generally empty and the people that are there are quiet, but I do use various promotions to go watch movies like 2 tickets for one and popcorn vouchers and such.

One major area where you're limited is that you get to see it last.
In the world of spoilers it's become somewhat of a necessity to be among those who get to spoil, whilst the rest have to go in hiding.

When it's your turn to spoil, nobody
cares anymore. You're an outcast of society. A loser. Cancelled.

Dr Strange 2 opening next week.
Whatcha gonna do?

I am not much of a movie person anymore, but my daughter nagged me to go watch the new Sonic 2 movie, spent over R600 for 3 people for 1hr30min's entertainment, even sucky DSTV doesn't seem all that bad for a few bucks more for an entire month, that being said there's just so much more fun to be had doing something else for that money and which lasts generally more than 1hr30min :p each to their own I guess.

To be honest, I do not mind to wait 3 months, often less, to see a movie in 4k on my TV. These days, movies gets released online much faster than before. Last year HBO treated us the whole year in releasing all their movies online and in cines the same day. For some years now, I have rather stuck that R1,000+ each month into some share portfolios and it did well for me, even today with almost all markets having experienced some big crashes after Covid and the War in Ukraine.

Still not worth it for me to spend such big money in cinemas just to be one of the 'first' to watch a movie.

Nah, the experience ain't the same. Not even close. It's unfortunately become too expensive so I only watch certain movies whose enjoyment is enhancement by being on IMAX.

Smuggle in your own snacks. Easier if you have a lady friend otherwise use your man bag. You could use those fake Gucci ones that are all the rage these days.
My moon bag is only for manly essentials.

How can sitting in a dirty disgusting cinema, surrounded by selfish pricks on their phones, chatting to each other, discussing the movie out loud...etc etc etc.....be better than watching it at home?

If you believe a cinema is a great experience you are lying to yourself.
