The City of Cape Town has stuck to its decision to pay the legal fees for fraud-accused councillor Nora Grose who faces charges of misappropriating City funds.

City council speaker Felicity Purchase declined to elaborate on the cost of Grose's legal fees

Thanks to GOOD's Brett Herron for keeping the heat up. They even allowed her to stand and she was elected again despite the corruption charges, while that loud mouth John is busy shouting about ANC members accused of corruption.

Still nothing compared to Zuma bill. First he bankrupts the country then still demand that Tax payers fit the bill.
Dangerous thinking. We should not be paying for politicians legal woes. Just like you responsible for your own legal issues.

The DA has always stated they are a tough against corruption. Why are they not walking the talk?

If she's guilty then she should pay the bills.
The onus is on the City to recover the money, and we all know that's not going to be one of their priorities, so the money is as good as gone, the only saving grace would be if she is found not guilty.

Everyday I have more and more sympathy for people who refuse to vote. Because let's face it Politics are by now mostly filled by people doing it as a career not a Civic Duty and a lot of Business people simply influence Policies via lobbying.

Edit to add: And it's a worldwide problem.

Has that not always been what politics is all about? A few people who are committed to the ideals and lot more who are just in it for money and power? I don't think it's a recent phenomenon, perhaps the only difference is privatization, it has created a lot more opportunities for politicians to loot. The information age also means things are way more transparent than they used to be.

Herron added Purchase's explanation that the law allowed the DA to provide legal support to its councillor was unacceptable.

"The test is whether it is ethical and common sense. The DA also has a hypocrisy problem. They challenged the abuse of public funds to pay for former president [Jacob] Zuma's legal defence - and they won the court case."

"The City of Cape Town is unable to provide the total legal costs at this stage. Numerous postponements by the State, notwithstanding the lack of evidence against councillor Grose, have led to ongoing legal costs in this case," she said.

Purchase added the attorney acting on behalf of Grose had at various court appearances requested the removal of the case from the court roll.

The DA is doing nothing wrong. Please read the articles.

The Hawks initially said Grose was linked to the misappropriation of TERS funds but later corrected their statement, saying she was not involved.

Instead, she is accused of money laundering related to food parcels and for allegedly diverting money to a church.

Love how they are using Zuma as an example.

Much as I execrate thieves of public money and betrayers of the public trust, there's an important civilisational principle at play, one we should not surrender: the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

Having charges brought against you is emphatically not the same as being found guilty of those charges.

It's important that we respect this principle.

Something doesn't have to be wrong to be morally and ethically flawed. Zuma is also not doing anything wrong by frustrating the legal process to make sure he goes to the grave without ever accounting in court for his charges, it's all provided for in law.

And yes, Zuma is a perfect example to show just what a bunch of hypocrites they are.

We are all presumed innocent but must use our own to maintain that presumption. Why must public representatives get the option of the public paying to defend them of charges that they stole from that very same public. In theory, the law is right to try prevent malicious persecution for political gain, but it needs to be more nuanced.

That is very fair, but the DA has never cared about that before when they scold the ANC for doing the same thing they are now doing.

Here's what the righteous John said

President Cyril Ramaphosa must lay charges of corruption against his own party members and suspend them immediately, and not allow the ANC's Integrity Commission to dish out a warning and a reward package.

He did not do any of the things he suggested to Cyril when it came to one of his own.
