City of Joburg speaker Vasco Da Gama voted out in marathon council sitting

Vasco Da Gama, the speaker of the Joburg council, was voted out of office with the help of the DA's coalition partners on Thursday morning.

Da Gama faced a motion of no confidence brought by smaller opposition political parties at the council sitting, which began on Wednesday morning.

What drove his removal was the belief that he unlawfully appointed an acting council secretary.

The DA and its coalition partners in the city were confident that the motion would fail because the opposition political parties needed support from their coalition partners for the motion to succeed.

The DA's coalition partners in the Joburg council showed the coalition's fragility as Da Gama was voted out by 136 votes, with 132 councillors voting against it.

This means some coalition partners defected to give the ANC, EFF, AIC and other minority opposition parties the support needed to remove Da Gama successfully.

Same old - same old drama like in PE - unreliable "partners" with petty grievances unable to see the bigger picture.|
ANC just needs to sit back and watch the folly.
Perhaps that's the attitude the DA has towards their coalition partners, that their grievances are petty and its only the DA who is capable of seeing the bigger picture. It's never going to end well when there's arrogance at the centre of the relationship, the recent Tshwane debacle showed exactly that.

I am still waiting to hear the DA talk to the merits of the DA Gama accusations, because so far all I hear is unsubstantiated rumours of bribery.

Earlier, coalition members voted for us but now that they voted against us, there must be bribery involved as we have no place for bribery. /s

According to Phalatse, the coalition government in Johannesburg would do some introspection because the City could not afford the return of the ANC into office.

"We note with utter shame that certain coalition members elected to vote in favour of the motion. We are also aware that there were allegations of bribery ahead of the motion, which will be detailed in an affidavit. As the multi-party government, we will introspect on what needs to be done to regroup, as Joburg cannot afford to be handed back to a cabal who place self-interest ahead of the needs of Joburg's six million residents," Phalatse said in a statement on Thursday morning.

The DA approaches coalitions with a super majority attitude.... -our way, or no way.... - less bloody politics and more adulting - put the citizens first, ....2024 will deliver a coalition result, - if this is a taste of what is to come...hold on ...

Not exactly. The EFF has swopped sides as they are hoping to manipulate a factional fight in the ANC for leadership.

If it was just the EFF it wouldn't be a big deal there are councillors who are part of the coalition who voted to oust the Joburg speaker. That goes beyond EFF politics and suggest that things are no longer what they used to be in the coalition.

The Tshwane guy also tried to bulldoze his ideas through without the buy in of the other parties in the coalition, he only retracted his idea when it was clear that he wasn't going to get support.

Standard stuff they all full of it. That's why I say always vote for the second largest party. That'll keep them on their toes for us.

They all talk nonsense they all lie they all steal. When the power hangs in the balance that's when they will work for you to remain in office.

So easily bribed.

The DA world be a lot better without them.
Can't the DA just better the bribe? What's up with the cheapness? They just got a R16m donation, not like they are broke.

They've implied before that if coalition partners don't give in to all their demands, they will be happy to let the ANC continue to be in power.

If you were brought up in European system like DA cadres, you wouldn't be so flippant. There is no such word in European dictionary.
