South African city lost nearly R5 billion worth of electricity in a year

Johannesburg power utility City Power lost nearly R5 billion of the electricity it purchased from Eskom in the 2023/24 financial year, EWN reports.

Most of the losses were due to illegal connections, faulty meters, and billing errors.

Cut off the illegal connections in townships most of the problem is solved. People get caught and reconnect via the same City Power/Eskom corrupt technicians who charge a "fee" to connect you again illegally. The other issue is the collections and corruption within the COJ which includes well known property management agents and developers.

This is just the latest one though, every week there's an outage for the same areas which takes up to 3 days to fix just for it to go out again 3 days later, rinse and repeat.

I know :-( I drive through there every day :-( but it seems it's most areas lately they literally don't seem to be able to control anything

CityPower must stop trying to overcharge paying customers and get non-payers to start paying.
CityPower must stop deflecting the losses to old infrastructure - we all know the real reasons - non-payers (aka thieves).

Only 11% of City Power's customers in Alexandra pay for electricity
Before the start of the smart meter installation project, only 4% of City Power's customers in Alexandra were paying.

The less than 11% payment rate in townships is responsible for the R5b loss.

Numerous areas out for 2+ days now. I have friends in 3 different areas on CP - Blairgowrie, Olivedale and Bryanston. All out for days now. Mate in Bryanston said they came to fix his substation last night and blew it up properly. Apparently the sky lit up like daytime and a plume of smoke like a mushroom cloud rose into the air.
