Does this strike anybody else as being a bit vague?

What exactly are the goals of this project? Free or cheap broadband connectivity? Whose going to pay the international bandwidth bills? Free local voice calls? That would be very cool and doable.
But apart from free voip calls this sort of project has the potential of becoming a very expensive white elephant or very costly to the end user.

Ja what ever, ignore all the other cities...

This is being driven by the Johannesburg Municipality.
If you live in another town then maybe you should get your municipality to do the same thing. It's not like the JHB municipality is going to start rolling out networks in other cities.

Arrrggg has the Joburg Munipipality been fast asleep or what? - surely by now it would know exactly how crap Telkodemonopolies' broadband is and should have known better than to shortlist the monopolistic beast...

Congratz to Neology for being shortlisted :).

Death to Telkodemonopolies!!!
Viva to renaming the DoC to Dementia of Communistications.
Viva to napalming Poison Ivy's arse and all her plants.

Yeah what's with Telkom being short-listed?? I thought that one of the original reasons for the municipalities self-providing was because of Telkom?
