I assume that every household has to have smart meters in the area so that each house can be controlled. If ESKOM wants this to work in other suburbs.

Did you read the article?

For this programme, Eskom requires that individual households have smart meters that allow the utility to control their power supply remotely.

Wait till I rock up to their electric car charger in my new electric car.
Gonna suck so many KW they gonna be load shedded one time muahaha

The proposed ESKOM/ANC smart meters is just ANC white noise. They can't fix the power generation so they come with smart meters hoping to confuse the public and kick the ball futher down the road.
This can only work in a small place like Clerens. Most people in the big centers do not work at home so who is going to switch heavey usage devices. Typical ESKOM/ANC idea where no thought has been put in. Every houshold will have to have the new so smart meter to make it work and who is going to pay for the meter. If you dont have a smart meter ESKOM/ANC cant switch you off but can switch off anybody who has a smart meter for using more electricity than allowed.
Typical installation will not be less than 30 minutes per meter. Its going to take year's to install these meters.
What is going to happen to all the customers who get power from their local municipality as opposed to directly from Eskom. Who is going to take responsibility supply and installation.

I did some power generation work in Newcastle and they had a good system with the big industries in the town where Eskom would require a cut of X MW and each industry would cut what they could as not all needed all the power all the time. Final option was ripple relays on geysers. Worked well while there was that communication.

Escourt has a similar system where all the big industries have put in place their own power generation which makes up for load shedding in the town.
But the residents come to the party by reducing their usage.
It's a great system.
Hopefully will soon see a lot of towns implement their own 100Mw Small private plants in increments to generate capacity.

Both of idea's good as they maybe gives ESKOM/ANC a out and that is fixing the problems at the power stations. Newcastle on the otherhand is not the size of Gautengs industrial areas. Johannesburg did use ripple relays for decades. Not sure that the system still works.
Installing ripple relays nation wide would be a massive task and cost billions no different to smart meters.

Self generation is probably the way to go if we dont want to see more load shedding. The sad thing is we still need Eskom for Baseload power

Oh for sure and they have to work and keep working but surely technology has improved? As to size; this is where smaller grids come in and better control systems. Create 10 "Newcastles" for the Gauteng industrial zones but I am not a HC elec eng.

But with ANC SA absolutely zero chance of any of it happening or even what worked 15 years ago working now.

Clarens has about 1000 residents, about 60% are white.
dont know how accurate that is ,Clarens has a huge labour force during picking season ,they cant all live out somewhere else ,also a huge influx of tourists ,just Fouriesburg is over 20 000 people .they use load curtailment and cut usage by a minimum of 10%,all voluntary,Eskom warns them a few hours before loadshedding and they have to maintain a lower load over that time period for the project to work .
