Clashes have erupted between Israeli police and Palestinians at the al-Aqsa mosque just hours into a ceasefire with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Police fired tear gas, stun grenades and sound bombs at worshippers attending weekly prayers at the compound - a flashpoint holy site revered by Jews and Muslims which sparked the most recent conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned earlier that Gaza's Hamas militants would be met with "a new level of force" if they broke the ceasefire.

The ANC owe much of their free-dom to the Palestinians... let's hope they repay their 40 year old debt and send some of the SANDF's finest over there to sort out those naughty Israelis.

Minor flair-up.

At noon, thousands of Palestinians gathered in the tree-lined compound surrounding the mosque for Friday prayers. Many stayed on to demonstrate in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, cheering and waving Palestinian flags.

An Israeli police spokesman said that some of the Palestinians gathered threw stones and petrol bombs towards officers who had been stationed along the compound's gates. The officers responded by dispersing them, the spokesman said.

A Reuters photographer said police fired stun grenades towards the Palestinians. It was not immediately clear what set off the clashes.

The confrontations died down within about an hour, with Israeli police retreating to their positions at the compound's gates. Medics said 20 Palestinians were wounded, with two transferred to hospital for treatment.

What were the police doing at the mosque?

But why that profile pic.

Trying to prevent retardedness. Police are stationed throughout "hot" zones in Israel.
Watch any video of where Palestinians gather or have large foot traffic. You will find at least a pair of IDF or police walking around if you look for them.
