I don't know if I should be telling everyone how stupid I am, but I can blame step 2

Step 1: Have problem with computer freezing

Step 2: Reinstall windows 2000 and find you now cannot log on to mywireless after numrous installations and calls to help desk.

Step 3: decide to reformat hard drive, move all data over to 2nd hard drive

Step 4: listen to the mumbo jumbo on internet that says you don't need to have windows 2000 4 x boot stiffy disks as this can be done using windows 98 1 x boot stiffy disk

Step 5: Type in format c: and actually format data drive D

Step 6: Find out mistake and have to use 2000 boot disks to format drive C:

Step 7 : clean computer and get prize for being a right idiot.

Was your C: NTFS and D: FAT32? When you boot in dos, D: becomes C: -> Format c: = Tears!

When you format your C: NTFS it won't be picked up by DOS (aka Windows 98) bootup, it will automatically assign D: to C: as that is the next "logical" drive.

I find Windows XP Professional an all round faster and more flexible enviroment than W2k. I just boot up with my CD and format my NTFS formatted drive safely from within the setup of WinXP

a tough lesson to learn... and I learnt it the hard way, lost 19 gig of MP3's and almost 6 months worth of work that way....

Help save the bandwidth. Decent download speeds for TheRodent! Stop downloading now!!!

I should have spoken to you guys earlier. Anyway, I can at least laugh at my stupidity. Still, a point worth making is that I couldn't resolve the reinstallation of the mywireless software after reinstalling windows 2000. So beware anyone else who wants to try.

Robone, If it is not already too late - don't touch that partition yet!!!

There are a number of software products that can recover lost files from damaged, or even re-formatted drives. One of these that I have used with great success is "Lost & Found" by PowerQuest. With "Lost & Found" you could download a demo version that analyses the disk and reports on the chances of recovery, and if high, you could then purchase the software. I have heard of other packages but can't remember the names off hand - try a google search.

Unfortunately, PowerQuest has been purchased by Symantec (Dec 2003), so sadly another set of truly excelent products will go down the drain. This also means that "Lost & Found" probably isn't available anymore although you may still find it on the shelves. Let me know if I can help further.
