Cloning a drive - problems

i am trying to clone the drive of one of my mbp's.
the drive and os on the machine are good - ran disk utility to do any repairs if needed before cloning.
the mbp performs perfectly - no issues with it.

the drive to accept the clone is new and good.

once the cloning was completed the machine was unable to start up from it.
disk utility is unable to unmount the drive to repair any errors if found.
when trying to eject the drive - an error message always appears stating the drive is busy.
even when all applications are closed a normal unmount is impossible - always requiring a force unmount.
the led is static when all this is going in indicating no activity either.

i have used carbon copy for ages without issue.
any ideas as to what may be going on here ?

I'd try a copy of norton ghost...that seems to be capable of dealing with a lot of weird stuff.

And when you plug in the destination drive after the clone, able to access all the data easily? No slowness etc.?

Got a Windows machine? Check that source drive using Hard Disk Sentinel.

The simplest way to clone a drive is to use Disk Utility.

But yes, using DU will be a good test in this case though I don't think it'll help. I think the source drive is a bit funny...

I had a similar issue last week when cloning my mac drive to a new ssd using superduper. What worked instead was booting to my recovery partition and using disk utility to clone. It might just work, lets see.

drive performs perfectly. yet to find a file ( about 300GB of video) that does not open.


just noticed something now.
every so often the drive appears empty in finder


but after ejecting and reconnecting everything appears again


while mounted and all folders visible trying to run disk utility fails:

i use clonezilla as it seems to work the best and least issues

Run console, and check the logs

Specifically for disk errors. I suspect hardware failure (drive failure imminent)
Either that or check ram, if you've recently updated/replaced ram.

Yep. Still a very capable tool.

i forgot to mention, this drive used to contain a clone of the mbp's drive - booted & functioned perfectly (used it many times).
decided on a fresh clone - problems ever since.

So that then points back to the machine/app... Interesting to see what happens with DU.

You say you have a few Macs, how about using CCC on another one? Clone source to destination over USB?

i'm more a "hissy fit" kinda person.
inclined to smash things before simply binning them - there is a certain amount of misplaced satisfaction to be had

Guess you're too busy to run console and check the computers logs to see what it thinks..
Still suspect the drive though.
