Edit - please no sync solutions. I already have gdrive and dropbox.

Right so the other day my laptop didn't turn on. So time for a backup solution - nothing mission critical but might as well.

Think I might as well get a family plan & hook up fam's computers too. So probably looking for something in the 13 USD /pm range.

So...help me think here. Need it to:

  • Supports linux and windows
  • ~8 devices
  • Probably like 500GB but ideally unlimited
  • Need to be able to selectively backup / by folder. Don't want linux ISOs & similar crap backed up

I'm leaning towards SpiderOak, with Crashplan second. I don't want a custom rolled sync solution - will probably end up doing that too (Raspberry pi project, hence needs linux support) but that's a different story.

Any thoughts / experiences?

I have Dropbox at $9.99 (plus vat) a month for 1TB - easy peasy chicken and cheesy.

"mostly"? Anything you're not happy about?
Can't really remember but there have been some issues since I started using them in 2014.

We have an old XP PC (due for replacement) that it's unreliable on.

Restoring a file isn't very fast. Not sure what will happen if you try to restore a whole directory, if it can.

On one PC it failed to restore a file repeatedly but it worked from another PC.

Overall it works well. I like that it keeps deleted files. It's also encrypted client side. Has web and app access. Use it on one account and three PCs. Got the 1 TB account. Support has been acceptable.

Office 365 had 1TB of One Drive space. I use that and it syncs my laptop and my phone. Easy peasy.

hmm...sounds like I'll go with a month to month sub first then. Thanks for the feedback

I have Crashplan and find it does the job.
I had a few minor issues with it though in the last 3 or so years.
1. Innitial upload took for ever, but that's more of a South African internet problem than a Crashplan problem. At the time I looked at different options, I didn't really like the local SA offerings even though they had the option to send your initial backup to them on a hard drive.
2. It gets confused if you change the name of a external hard drive, a issue which I am still trying to sort out. I even emailed support about this, all they can tell me is that they recommend you don't ever change the name of a drive, which gets quite difficult if you reach a point where you have 15 different sized external drives for different tasks. Who anyway thinks of giving their external hard drives intuitive names right from the start?
3. I've never done this because it looks quite daunting but I will have to eventually format my Mac and do a clean install of everything. Again all drive names, user names etc has to be kept exactly the same for it to properly sync up and recognize your existing cloud backup, otherwise it will want to start everything all over.

Just the other day I actually thought of having a look at other options again once my Crashplan subscription comes to a end, because this hard drive thing and jumping threw hoops if you want to format doesn't really work for me, unfortunately my sub only runs out in September because I renewed it for a year.
