In a surprise move, the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has begun to scrap certain healthcare policies that insurance companies offer in preparation for government’s dream of a National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme.

Yeah well... sorry for the pooooah.... They should go cry to government about this.

No wonder Discovery announced they will be expanding abroad. I heard that they intend to move all business out of the country in the next few years keeping local services to a minimum.

These products must be abolished by March 2021 – years before government’s ambitious deadline for the NHI to start delivering services to the most vulnerable in 2026.

Dr Sipho Kabane, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the CMS, wrote in the circular that the low-cost projects and all the existing low-cost products on the market would undermine the NHI, which is official government policy.
So, if you have no money and your are poor, just don't get sick between 2021 and 2026, it undermines then NHI.

Can anybody think of anyone that would fit into that category?

Oh wait, certain people can't think!

Although the CMS’ express goal is to advance the interests of members of medical aid schemes, the body has repeatedly welcomed the NHI and pledged its cooperation with the project.

The CMS’ board is appointed by the minister of health.
'nuff said.

Wow Jopie, I didn't know that they are leaving South Africa as opposed to just expanding abroad. Thanks for telling us, man.

Here is the sugar-coated public release... You can make of it, or interpret it as you wish. What you will never hear, however, is what is being discussed by a small hand-full of people behind closed doors in Discovery.

Discovery's Adrian Gore: We can grow health insurance business abroad

here is a major opportunity to grow health insurance in Asia and elsewhere in the world, says Discovery Group CEO Adrian Gore.

He was speaking during a conference call with investors and shareholders on Wednesday, where he shed light on recently announced leadership changes in the group, as well as director's dealings.

In a notice to shareholders on November 28, 2019, Discovery announced that it would launch a new international company, Vitality Health International, to be headed by Jonathan Broomberg, from January 2020. Broomberg is the current CEO of Discovery Health. Current deputy CEO Dr Ryan Noach will subsequently replace Broomberg, as part of a transition process which has been coming along for 18 months.

Gore reiterated this in the conference call. "Jonathan Broomberg has been CEO of Discovery Health. Our view going forward, we see health insurance as a major growth opportunity both in the market in Asia and elsewhere. As countries become more prosperous, private healthcare and health insurance continues to grow," he said.

Discovery is known for its behavioural insurance model, in which its clients are incentivised to choose behaviours that promote better health.

Reads like they just expanding, but they wouldn't be were they are today if they were dumb. And keeping all your eggs in SA is pretty dumb.

Nonetheless, you asked for the article. Use it, don't use it. Like I said, interpret it the way you want. By the way, for those who do not know, Discovery has been abroad for many, many years already. The Vitality brand is big in the UK. Unfortunately, they are very expensive there. That is about to change real soon. They will be exiting SA in coming years.

The article does not backup your claim in the slightest though... so still looking for the article where they will be exiting SA almost entirely...

Well he does have a financial incentive to discourage people from leaving South Africa. After all the people leaving are the ones he generally makes the most money off. It's also easy to be positive when at worst you'll end up just really rich instead of filthy rich if things go completely to hell in South Africa.

So, if you have no money and your are poor, just don't get sick between 2021 and 2026, it undermines then NHI.
It's a way to keep selling those poorer people on the wonders of the South African NHI. They might think it can wait if they already have an alternative.
