The Home Office has admitted that the street price of both cocaine and heroin has fallen by nearly half in the last ten years, making the most dangerous illegal drugs cheaper than they have ever been.

Based on reports from police forces, the Home Office said that cocaine is now being sold for as little as £20 a gram in some parts of the country.

The most common price for the drug is £40 per gram. Home Office figures for 1998 show the average price was £77.

A gram of heroin can now be bought for as little as £25, with the average price somewhere between £40 and £50 per gram. In 1998, the average was £74.

The Home Office figures are based on data collected from police forces and the Serious Organised Crime Agency.

According to DrugScope, a charity that provides research and advice on drugs policy, gram of cocaine can make between 10 and 20 lines for snorting, depending on its strength.

That means a line of cocaine can cost as little as £1, with an average price per line of between £2 and £4.

The average price of a pint of lager is around £2.75, although some pub chains have reacted to the credit crunch by cutting the price of a pint as low as 99p. A glass of wine typically costs £3.50.

The figures were uncovered by the Tories, who said they proved that Labour had failed to stem the flow of Class A drugs into the UK.

Well I suppose the 'sin' tax on alcohol and cigarettes has had a somewhat ironic effect.

Drugs here are cheaper than that. And Im pretty sure our stats are much worse than theirs. You just buy into the panic that their journos always try to provoke, they don't look at things in a relative sense. I think drinking is still by far the bigger issue, and that spans all generations as far as I can tell.

No they're not - not by a long shot. However like HumanoidTyphoon pointed out, their bigger issue is booze...

They were cheap when i was there, although that was 2001? I was earning pounds though?

Most of the stuff was way cheaper than the article seems to think.

LOL @ SuRVO and tau1z. I remember the days when they used to cook up a lekka briyani and a mutton curry in kitchens all over the Cape Flats, now its tik that contains all sorts of poisons. I'd say if you're going to get high, smoke a nice swazi and stay indoors where you won't be a bother to anyone.

Street prices vary quite a lot, as does quality. Even if the figures quoted are correct, i.e. what is in the documents, does not mean they're a reflection of real typical street prices.

Proves nothing really. Supply could be steady, but demand down due to economic conditions (the majority of users are just ordinary people who have to prioritise their finances). If supply is up it does not mean anything has changed on the law enforcement side - the police only ever stop a small fraction of the total smuggled anyway. As far as I know heroin production is up.

It depends on the drug. These days a lot of the cocaine and heroin probably comes straight here from the source countries. Things like MDMA often came from The Netherlands and Israel. LSD typically from The Netherlands as well. From what I've been told sometimes they were cheaper/better in the UK, sometimes here.

Exactly, booze really is the worst drug, but wait, it's not even a drug, it's a toxin... the effects of alcohol on a person are really shocking, i mean it isn't good for the body and it really doesn't leave you with much control after you've had enough...
