I've only just discovered this after registering on the CoCT site.

The question now arises: do they trust you enough to allow you to capture your own water meter readings? And do they actually verify these readings?

After my last scare of receiving a R15k water bill I was hoping they have something like this so ff this has been around for a while then I apologise :)

Good thing, yes/no?

They do, but think about this. If you go on holiday on 15 December and only come back on 15 January and they estimate your reading then you're going to pay for water which you haven't used.

If you are allowed to enter it yourself, at least you have some form of control in that you can tell them what you've used.

CoJ allows you to enter your electricity usage, but they will still send meter readers around to collect your readings. I'm also fairly certain they [CoCT] will have a clause in their T&C's that say they can inspect your meters at any time and that you will still be subject to manual readings. In addition, I reckon they'll also have another clause that says they will penalise and/or prosecute for intentionally trying to dupe them.

With regards to them overestimating your usage, if they overestimate they are obliged to give you credit for the next billing period.

Where I live they've begun to audit the meters.
I have prepaid electricity and they audit that thing often, I know this because the bloody IDIOTS don't close the box when they're finished.

We email our meter readings. So far, so good.

If they want to audit us, they're welcome. We don't do the cheating thing.

Basically you shoot yourself in the foot if you lie ;) they send people to check your meter reading less regularly but yah they do send them. <--- so it's not about trust but rather that their system won't balance out and you will have an insane 12th month account

Pmb allows us to do this. The plan is to have someone check your meter every now and then to ensure you are submitting accurate readings.

Works when they get it right. But their system has been having a few jinxes lately judging by the local press.
