Hi guys

Planning a short trip to coffee bay in the Eastern Cape, flying to EL Airport.
Anyone got suggestions of things, experiences in the area to recommend.

So far I've got, go to the famous hole in the wall.
Hike along the beach and have a meal at white clay restaurant.

This is a pretty honest reflection of what you can expect at Hole in the Wall. While they advise not going there, I say go there, but be careful. People will try take advantage of you there.

If you enjoy backpacker vibes and hiking, it should be a cool experience.

The roads are all schit, so you'll be okay if you're in a rental car (they make the best 4x4s). Smoke weed, drink beer, hang with hippies - that's about it.

If you have a few days to spare, spend a few nights at Bulungula. They have a pretty interesting story, and the whole setup is run by the local community.

If I go back that side I'll just spend a whole week there to be honest.

Fun video, was nice to watch and reminded me of my time there. They totally got scammed for R50. I thought South Africans would know that as soon as someone starts guiding you, you inform them that you don't have cash on you, and can’t tip them.

Thanks for the tip, unfortunately flights and accommodation already booked.
Will make a note of Bulungula, maybe we can go and spend a few hours there.

Spent two weeks along the Wild Coast early in Dec 2020. Here's a summary:

Hole in the wall was great. Accomodation at the hotel was cheap but a little run down (suitable for our 3 night stay). Glad we got out when it rained though, as the thatch roof leaked and made the accomodation dank and smelly. We had one meal at the restaurant and that was fine. The rest of our stay we bought fresh fish, rock lobster and mussels off the locals every morning. The beaches and hotel pool are great for kids and most days there were very few people on the beach. Did quite a bit of hiking and showed the in-laws what strandloper middens look like. Found lots of old clay pottery from more recent settlements.

Coffee Bay. I stayed at the backpackers a few years ago and it used to be lovely but that has all changed. It's all gone to pieces. The town is now populated by drug addicts and criminals. We stopped for coffee at a recently opened restaurant which was nice but quickly got back on the road. Really disappointing how bad this place has become. I'd rather spend a holiday in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique - probably safer.

White Clay. Stumbled across this place and stopped for lunch. Wow. Absolutely lovely and can highly recommend. Great restaurant with a jaw dropping view across the coastline. Accomodation looked nice as well.

Mazeppa Bay. Stayed at the hotel. This place hasn't changed since I visited 10 years ago. Absolutely lovely. Accomodation was like R300 per person per night which is rediculously cheap, was clean, and had all the amenities. Food was great, drinks were well priced. Beaches were lovely and we spent most days playing beach cricket and swimming.

TIPS:
- Take a breadmaker and ingredients. That way you can make your own fresh bread every day.
- Take an icemaker. Most places either don't stock ice or their machine is broken.
- Take a 2x4, 4x4 or rental car with high ground clearance for the roads cattle paths.

Looks amazing. This one got dropped from our December trip as the other members of our group didn't want to stay in huts. What kind of vibe is this? Is it suitable for a family or is it more hippie / stoner accomodation? What kind of activities are nearby?

I didn't get any sort of stoner vibe - remember it's not very big as well so accommodation is limited. I think you will be fine with young kids, in fact the guy who recommended it to me has 2 young kids and they used to go regularly. But yea...it is a very rustic and basic setup, not really gonna work if you're looking for a more glamorous time. We mostly spend our time doing some fishing, canoeing and the odd hike here and there, but I think there are many more activities and things to do

Napalm2880 did better than I could've.

One thing: Coffee Bay is in week 3 of water shortages so make sure your accommodation has tanks / their own infrastructure.
