Hi Everyone,

I would like to ask some advice from all of you with regards to some COJ Billing Issues.

My First post might be a little longer than usual and please only reply if you can add value to the topic. I have been searching high and low for answers to some of my questions on the Internet as well as this Forum and am sorry to say that there is a lot of talk but not really any answers with what I am going to ask.

Kindly bear with me as this particular post will be a little longer than a normal post and might offend some people, which is not intentional. The intention of this post is to get as much credible information from the people in the know to assist others that might have the same Issue I have.

The Outline.

We have been fighting with COJ with regards to our Electricity Bills for years. This is with regards to “Thumb Sucked” reading to “Actual Readings” on our Statements. At some stage I managed to get an email address from two individuals that responded sporadically every other month to some of the questions that I had with over billing.

Our Account, from me taking daily readings captured in an Excel Spreadsheet, was exaggerated on a good day by over 30%. Sum this up over a month and these ads up. Do this over 12 years it adds up even more.

We had some adjustments done after loads of emails to COJ (Phone Calls ineffective & who the hell has time to queue at their Offices) .

We then decided to do some tests as our Electricity Bills cost more than your average VW Golf Payments a month.
We turned off the lights, the fridges, the Geysers in summer etc. Testing bit by bit; we had test days where we switched everything of at the mains and spent time away from home at friends for an evening; the readings remained. Sometimes even higher than they were when we are at home.

At some stage a “Deposit” was required to the value of over 11k to keep the lights on. This reflects on our Bill every month. Nobody can explain what this is for and it does not reflect as a credit, just as a deposit. We paid this money some time ago just to not have them cut us off.

I resorted to getting external Reading Equipment to monitor what we actually use. This was connected to our Main Meter and has over the past three months “Proven” that COJ is still overcharging us by almost 30% on our Electricity Bill alone, daily, monthly.

My Request to the Community.

Does anyone have any Ideas as to whom one can contact to get these type of Issues resolved?
Let’s see how this post develops, I might offer a reward for someone that can fix this.

I have just had this experience with the local municipality. ONLY way to sort this out is to drag them to court. No amount of negotiation, begging, pleading, swearing worked. They are a law unto themselves.

Chat to a company called house hoppers or another with similar services. They deal with CoJ on your behalf and often know the right person to speak to about what problem.

Would love to switch but that is another hassle again. Also I need my 11k deposit back.
