Collapsing Infrastructure

Apparently a number of Johannesburg suburbs were left in the dark again on Tuesday evening.

I heard that a substation had tripped, causing a number of power failures and some areas affected included Highlands North, Melville, Rosebank, Killarney, Houghton, Illovo, Norwood, Parkmore, the inner city, Yeoville and the surrounding areas.

Did you eat a cold dinner in front of your wind up radio?

Collapsing infrastructure?! I don't understand your title? Anyways, your post about leaving SA, and this one has left me confused. A substation blowing/tripping is quite common all over the world. Like they say "**** happens"

But does it happen so often. Here in PMB the local newspaper ran a story that claimed from credible sources that our power grid was collapsing.

In the last few weeks Hilton has been having regular power failures. Personally the worst power failure that hit my house was on probably the coldest day of the year. We had no electricity the whole day plus the place stunk like cat pee and there were complaints about people getting sick from our water supply. In my mind that day proved to me that this place is going down the toilet.

I am unable to remember the last time our electricity was lost due to a blown transformer.

Sh*t doesn't happen here as much as it does there.

WE have power failures at least once a week. not necessarily because our infrastructure is failing, but because they are actually making it better.

Transformer pop, they fix and most probably with newer hardware. So yeah, it does happen, and at least it gets fixed with decent replacements

Ok, repeat after me: "I live in Canada, you live in South Africa". Yeah, believe it or not, things are not running so smoothly on our side of the world, but maybe it is because the USA (including Canada) can't take their heads out their @sses for 10 seconds, and realise that f@cking up a country (read war in Iraq) is VERY expensive and time consuming, and that time/money can be spent to better other people's lives (read 3rd world Africa). And yeah, we don't like to admit it, but in certain areas we are still 3rd world, BUT try and do banking in your country like we can do in ours ... impossible.

Power failures are a world wide problem. The US has had lots of issues, particularly in hot weather when aircons run wild.

I see Canada had a bad one just recently.
"on 1 August 2006 in the Laurentians, in the province of Québec, Canada, a large amount (146,000, at its peak in the evening of August 1st) of households were left without electricity for a whole day, and some for up to a whole week due to intense thunderstorms that rolled through southern Quebec including the Greater Montreal Area. Over 450,000 customers in total were affected."

Oh.. and Canada again on Oct 20....
"A breaker failure at the Colwood Substation meant lights-out for about 20,000 BC Hydro customers across the West Shore Tuesday morning.

Power went out at 9:30 a.m. for about 14 minutes after the breaker failed, cutting electricity to 11 circuit lines feeding Langford, Colwood and View Royal.

At numerous busy intersections on Sooke and Jacklin roads, four-way stop rules were in effect. Langford Fire Rescue chief Bob Beckett said they responded to one false alarm, but no blackout-related accidents were reported.

Steve Watson, spokesperson for BC Hydro, said maintenance crews were on hand to isolate and fix the problem quickly.

"It's quite rare, but these things do happen time to time," Watson said. "It was fortunate the crews were there, or it could have been out for several hours." "

First of all Canada is not in Iraq.

Secondly, I can do anything that I need to do, online or off for free.

What did your friendly neigbourhood bank charge YOU for bank fees and how did it make YOU feel?

Did you figure that one out all by yourself? Noone said Canada is Iraq. Read more carefully next time, or actually read to start off with.

Your point is? Free internet banking, so what. It is all about what you can do with that, oh excuse me, online banking that makes the difference.

Makes me feel fine and dandy thank you very much. Doesn't bother me, as I spend more money on cigarettes a month than on bank charges (the benefits of private banking you see)

Closing of threads is a bit childish. Who is moderating the moderators to make sure that "myadsl forums" remain within government guidelines?? Close the thread and make a recycle bin where we can see why a certain thread was deleted/closed.
