Colonialism brought the written word to the South African people's among many other benefits.

Although I don't doubt for a minute that the people here would have developed the written word and all the other benefits of colonisation over time. Should they not at least show appreciation for getting a hand up?

Alternative facts popping up their head again. Doesn't take into account where they were before colonialism. Also many African countries were never colonised and are still a monumental failure with people dying of famine. Others that were are now falling apart after the colonial overlords left. Your overlords want a socialist society but that is a product of Western democracy and colonialism. The very fact you are having this discussion instead of herding cattle is because of colonialism.

Alternative facts indeed. Please name one African country that was never ever colonized?

EDIT: I'm not saying anything about the good or bad of colonialism, just the correctness of the assertion that many African countries were never colonized.

Sure, on what the (incorrect) reply will be? Not much of a bet!

I'll take R5 on Liberia, R10 on ethiopia, and R50 on shifting the goalposts to arguing what the definition of colonisation means.

I blame this on America. Most of the world trade with them so English became the dominant trade language for everybody that doesn't have a common language. You just have to look at the English used and manner in which it is spoken, in most instances it's American and not British.

I think Ethiopia was never colonized and they managed to win battles preventing it.

They were occupied by Italy for a few years from just before the 2nd WW (1936) to during it (1941), but still not a list of "many African countries".

They had an portion of their country controlled by Italians before then as well, but that was done in exchange for weapons and technology. This was due to the fact that they had their own imperialistic ambitions.

Liberia wasnt colonised by Western powers, because in essence it was a colony formed by former slaves from the USA and Caribbean regions. The original colony alongside Mississippi-in-Africa and the small country of The Rebublic of Maryland (both later absorbed into greater Liberia) formed the basis for modern Liberia.

The Liberian flag is the only flag in the world to be modeled after and resemble the American flag because Liberia was the only nation in the world that was founded, colonized, established, and controlled by freed African-American and ex-Caribbean slaves as settlers from the United States and the Caribbean with the help and support from the American Colonization Society (ACS), which was a private organization establishment that sent freed American and ex-Caribbean slaves as settlers from the United States and the Caribbean.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Liberia

It would have been political suicide for any Western Power to try and colonise Liberia considering it was formed by former slaves.

colonialism was a bit of a double edged sword.
while it brought new idea ideas, technology etc, it also brought along a whole lot of oppression & servitude

We know the negatives. I would like to hear thank yous for the positives.

There are many negatives , but you cannot change the past....

There are also many positives

ANC supporters seem to forget that the Afrikaners fled to the Free State / Transvaal to escape from Colonialism.

And then had to defend their freedom in two wars against the British Empire.

At the end of the last war they were crushed by 500 000 Colonial soldiers, with massive loss of life amongst woman and children. Many blacks also died in British concentration camps.

But no, all whites are colonials, even the Afrikaners, as well as thousands of Europeans who arrived after 1910 (formation of the Union of SA).
