Coming soon – Check new debit orders before they are authorised

The fact that we need such a service tells you how broken the system is in the first place.

Fix the cause, don't treat the symptoms.

Brilliant initiative. I've been advocating this for years.

Only snag is, how will someone without a cellphone be able to authorise a debit order? Believe it or not, but I know of a prominent businessman who just refuse to get a cellphone or WhatsApp. His only electronic communication is via email.

Good idea which has been on the cards for a while now.

However criminals will find a workaround and then you'll struggle to cancel even more.

Good idea and let's hope it gets implemented soon

I still can't understand how unauthorized sim swaps can take place. A sim swap leaves an electronic trail and it's easy to determine who authorized it and if the correct procedures were followed and if all the documentation are in place.

I worked on some AEDO implementations a few years ago, it was a massive pain to use and never caught traction. Let's see if this does.

What caused the pain? The debit order is captured at source, sms is sent to account holder and when return sms is received the debit order is activated.

Not sure of update but when I worked for an operator, if you had direct HLR access (rather than mediated access through and used someone else's log-in, you could do quite a lot of damage which was hard to trace.

The bust I was aware of was possible because authorities infiltrated a syndicate and were monitoring the suspect in action.

Ideally the system would be expanded to authorise variable debits and certain flagged debits every single month

Another frustrating issue (I have) is with Me&youmobile who arbitrarily do the deduction before month end when they feel like it, perpetrating the action intermittently to make it harder to challenge

What is the real cause and how is it fixed?

The fact that pretty much anyone can initiate a debit order against your account if they have the details with very little in the way of authorisation on your part.

Precisely, so they want to bring in proper authorization (a signature isn't good, can't be nicely automated and would give many false positives if they tried) and yet you say that is not the solution? (need that whatsapp thinkign emoji here)

Well it's coming from a third party.

That's my real issue with it.

Your bank should be handling all of this directly as the protector of your financials.

As Sauronza mentions the system is broken and there is a demand for this. It's a great service if one's bank has an expensive/complicated process to reverse debit orders. I've had to cancel one unauthorised debit order with Capitec but thankfully the app makes this a seamless and inexpensive process.

Any new debit order should require explicit authorisation from the client side via their banking portal or banking app.
You should be able to stop any debit order at any time with a simple click of your mouse.
