Communications Minister strongly opposes SABC job cuts

Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has expressed strong opposition to possible retrenchments at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

“As the shareholder, it is our considered view that any retrenchment exercise must be a last resort and an integral part of a holistic, well formulated and broadly canvassed turnaround plan aimed at steering the SABC towards future financial sustainability,” Mokonyane said in a statement on Monday.

So the taxpayer must just keep on throwing money into the abyss for no foreseeable return.
The SABC is extremely bloated any way and should be closed down completely.
There are 7 acting board members at a R1 Million rand a year.
How about starting there.

How do you inform and reach the majority of the population without SABC (you know they have a pile of local radios on which the poorest rely)?

You would accept to take fiduciary duties by being a board member for R1M per year? I certainly wouldn't.

Nomvula Mokonyane is the queen of blunders and stupidity. Seems just another brain fart

That said, so long as SABC is draining my hard earned tax money, I don't give a rat's ass what she thinks.

Why didn't you manage the SABC in a holistic, well formulated and broadly canvassed business plan aimed at steering the SABC towards future financial sustainability while you had the chance? Why does the ANC always break things before trying to fix it?

Why is it the business of the government(and thus the taxpayer) to provide "entertainment"(and I use that term very loosely) to people?
eTV manages to provide a better service in the same arena without being a drain on the taxpayers.
702 and 567 manage to provide all the left-wing propaganda to the airwaves that all good little socialists desire in their hearts.

There is no argument to this. There is direct evidence that the SABC is not needed. Not when they are a complete parasite on the people.

A well-run public broadcaster would not be a drain on the public purse. Unfortunately, that means getting lean which is the future for many SOE's. There are way too many bodies in the public sector.

It’s the business of the government to provide information and warn the population. How many people is etv reaching? I’m pretty sure SABC has a reach at least two to three times higher.

Entertainment is a bonus to fill the gaps.

In case of a war, how do you make sure the private broadcasters keep on broadcasting? A SLA will never achieve that.

Almost every country on earth has public broadcasters (even the US) for this reason, you cannot rely on private entities for something as critical.

The only thing is to manage it efficiently and SA is bad at this but it does work perfectly in many other places and shouldn’t be that hard once you take out the brainless cronies.

Commie governments, or perhaps ones that arise from revolutions or struggles, need somewhere to propagate their propaganda, even if it is disguised as entertainment

This is what happens I guess when you use SOE's as employment agencies. Chickens have come home to roost.

BBC, PBS, RTHK, KAN, NHK, KBS, PTS, ORF, RTBF, DR, ZDF, RTE, TG4, ABC.

All from very commie countries... (or rather the most capitalist countries on earth).

Communism is the exact opposite of capitalism is it not?

He hinted that communist governments need channels to have their propaganda.

I've listed a sample of the most capitalist countries on earth all having a public broadcaster.

I forgot obviously to mention the SABC who has never been a propaganda tool for a previous anti communist regime.
