Plan to cut smartphone prices in South Africa

Communications minister Solly Malatsi wants to see a threshold on the luxury goods tax charged on smartphones to make it more affordable for people to switch to 4G and 5G devices.

This will help migrate traffic off 2G and 3G, after which a deadline for switching off these legacy networks can be decided.

So now do we have to buy a MARA cell phone now.

These phones are not even made in SA.
Why do they even attract any import duties.
So when phone prices are forced down where will the GOVERNMENT get the shortfall in tax paid.
One hand does not know what the other hand is doing.

Don’t tax the device. Tax the usage. That is, if your ISP reports that you’re using it to learn and study, you get a tax rebate. If you’re using it to watch porn, then tax penalty.

But what about the people who watches the plumber fixing things on Porn Hub? Are they not learning valuable skills so they know never to call a plumber.

It is not feasible for an ISP to report any usage. Logging the internet usage of 43 Million people will take up a kakload of resources and costs.

Defeatist.

Is it just me or is the thread title and the title on the link on the 1st post contradictory?

Communications minister wants to see threshold on luxury goods tax charged on smartphones

Plan to cut smartphone prices in South Africa

I would have used the word "limit" rather than "threshold." The sentence reads poorly and its cumbersome.

Communications minister wants to see a limit set on the "luxury goods" tax applied to smartphones.

OR

Communications minister wants to see threshold placed on "luxury goods" tax charged on smartphones
