iPhone launch prices in South Africa — from 2009 to 2023

The starting price of Apple's flagship smartphones has more than quadrupled since the company's first model launched locally.

Since electronics like smartphones are imported from overseas, the severe weakening of the rand has contributed significantly to this increase.
The article is unfortunately completely forgets that the iPhone pricing in the US is excluding of mandatory sales tax.

Up to 15% in certain jurisdictions. To not have to deal with wildly different end customer prices everyone quotes prices ex. Sales Tax (like our VAT). So if you have $1 in your pocket and want to buy a 99c burger you can’t. Because it will cost more than that.

Edit: for a more apples to apples comparison (excuse the pun) just remove VAT from the South African price and then do the comparison.

It would be much more interesting/informative if MYBB pegged the price to a fixed R/$ rate. And added inflation to the graph.
