Next time buy a 1p sim.

£10 for 25GB and you're on EE, the fastest network. And you have EU roaming...
 
As a rural England guy I’m on the three network(Smarty). Not great, not ****.
In London it can be a bit hit and miss but is constantly being “upgraded” so rarely have an issue. Typically only really need it while seated on the underground which has good coverage.
From a cost perspective it is massively cheaper than South Africa and more importantly your data does not disappear magically.
 
the lack of esim in the UK is real - most shops there looked at me like I was a bit touched in the head and the one that did understand esim suggested adding me to my mate's contract (who has a vodaphone contact)

I think they post the sims out - so order one a couple days before you go and have it sent to your destination
 
Usually these MVNOs get lower LTE QCI values so your performance will be much lower than if you were using a native postpaid sim card. The carriers view mvno's as a way to sell excess network capacity while providing their own customers best service.

I live partly in the UK and partly in SA at the moment. I'm pretty certain that the best UK network is EE. Certainly in London. You can access prepaid EE through 1p, an incredibly cost effective ISP. Very cheap data and voice and no expiry. Only problem is that currently they only supply physical SIM cards and these have to be ordered online when you are in the UK and they are delivered by mail to your UK address.
 
I was in the UK in 2010 and used 3 and got great speeds at the time, taking into account that only HSPA was available back then. I got 11mbps then without issues. It was also quite affordable as I think I paid around £5 for 1GB. This was at a time where the most affordable mobile data in SA was 8ta's 3GB for R150.
