Hi,

Analog line died today, and ADSL was disconnecting every 2 minutes.
Called the analog guys but they say that as soon as you go to ADSL all queries for line issues must go to ADSL department. Called them at around 3pm or so, got a ticket number and the guys were here just after 6 and sorted it out.

I asked them about the cap and any way to increase it and they just said we'll just have to wait and see what happens in March or so when the other offerings become competive.

He also said there is already around 25 other ADSL users in my area (Queensburough) so I hope my constant 50/55kb/s downloads won't get affected as more people join up :)

If any Telkom guys are reading this, thanks to Shawn and the other guy with him to who helped out today.

I can second this. We also had some very bad line problems (I'm in Durban North) and the Telkom guys went out of their way to set everything up nicely, many thanks to Preggy and his coleage! They could easily just have said that ADSL isn't available for us, but instead they sorted us out, thanks guys! Now Telkom must just do something about the cap!

I have nothing against the techie guys. In actual fact speaking to some of them is rewarding.
Although many of them deserve a compliment when warranted. Its not these guys we are after.
But ultimately if Telkom goes down the drain then they might lose their jobs. (The techie guys that is)

Have to agree on this. The techies are generally speaking the most pleasant people at Telkom to work with. My wrath is saved for the people higher up.

Can only agree with this sentiment. The techies are excellent. They ensured my connection was up before leaving and left a cellphone number to call him on if I ever needed assistance (read "proper support".)

My wrath is reserved for, in order:

1. Telkom management (for mismanagement)
2. The people who answer the phone @ Telkom (for playing pass the call)
3. The accounts people (who frequently screw up)

4.High Cost of phone calls
5.High cost of ADSL.........etc etc etc

My personal experience with the techie guys when I installed ADSL was great. Unlike the phone in queries. I had to ask the guys at the exchange who were parked outside if the exchange was ADSL enabled. He didnt know at the time, but promised to find out for me. Lo and behold the next day he called me to tell me it was. And then about a week or so later he phoned again to see if they had installed the line yet. I was impressed. A simple question was greeted with enthusiasm and followed up on. And it wasnt even his job.

But the phone in people are useless. Dont even try to fill in the online complaints form. More people will read your sentiments here on MyADSL.

Does anyone have a Technical contact in Telkom. I applied for ADSL - Bellair area. Local Exchange is ready and enabled. Line from Ex to the pole across neighbours yard is ok, cable across yard has "conditions". Telkom advised me NO ADSL. Techie testing line wanted to replace cable but had to phone his superior. He was told not to. Then I applied for another line (as application department advised) another R200+ BUT they told me that there were no other lines avalible. Now what ??

The weather in Durbs can cause interminable problems with the quality of the telephone service. Degradation of line quality can be ascribed to climatic conditions, including related factors such as oxidation of metal distribution boxes, cable connectors loosening, wood borers eating the poles, etc. So your line suffers from the same problem, and needs to be fixed by Telkom to ensure you have a service of acceptable quality. Durban guys also did a clever thing a while back placing the under ground cables under the freeway... Boy did we have fun when that cable broke and our lines went down. They were nice enough to move us to a temporary line though after being down for 3 days.

I can relate... I've had complaints and within a couple of hours a techie guy has pitched up. Now, I have his cellphone number and I just phone him after I have logged the complaint and I get prioritised.

Hey guys if you think the Techies are doing good then goto:

http://www.telkom.co.za/webmaster/index.jsp

and give some feedback about it. I was doing some Cisco support a while back and had some leased line probs a few times and every time these guys sorted it out and everytime I made sure to give feedback. If the good guys ( smart and helpful ) like these are getting the praise then some of them will hopefully move up the ladder and get into management positions. This might help us in the end. Anyway I think people are always willing to stomp on heads when theres a prob but rarely does anybody praise the efforts being made by these type of guys.

Hi Jazz

I agree that positive feedback regarding good Telkom technicians and other workers is very necessary. Thanks for posting the links and I hope people make use of this suggestion. Maybe we must look at a forum where people can publish the names of effective (and possibly useless) workers and we can forward this information to the relevant Telkom department on a monthly basis….

Regards,
