So I had the unfortunate scenario of breaking the tailgate handle of my Qashqai the other day: I went to open it, force it a little too much as I hadn't seen that something was stuck inside the door.

Anyway, long story short I have called Outsurance (who we have comprehensive cover with) and they said that it wouldn't be covered as it was our fault.

Is that right? Are any damage unintentionally made by yourself not covered on a comprehensive insurance policy? I'm sure that if you dropped your phone, your insurance would cover this...

Thanks for helping us out.

Yes if you dropped your car...as in drove it into a pole then it would be covered.

But any mechanical or interior functional issues are not what you are covered for. That's where your warranty with the manufacturer would come into play.

If you actually read your policy instead of making assumptions about it, then you would know this already without having to ask the internet in such an accusing manner.

I ripped half my bumper off about 3 months back after not seeing a low lying wall and doing a wide turn in reverse.
I called Santam the same day, told them that i damaged my car by mistake. They sent me to an assessment centre and the claim was approved. Only negative thing that happened was my premium went up by R250 the next month.

Iv heard very bad things about outsurance

Or if he had a decent insurer they wouldn't repudiate claims which should be covered.

Thanks SauRoNZA,
sorry if I came out in an 'accusing manner'!

I did look into the policy https://www.outsurance.co.za/adx/aspx/adxGetMedia.aspx?DN=9cddef4a-e42f-4da8-84a8-7c0de7a3a554 but I couldn't find a section that deals with this. There is a 'Intentional loss or damage' part but this doesn't quite apply as I didn't intentionally want to break the handle.

Don't apologise to this idiot. You asked a question like thousands of others. When you need help, the myBB community will come through. Ignore negative ppl like this.

The car wasn't in any kind of accident.

He broke the door without driving it.

If I go outside and force open my sunroof now and it no longer works, my insurance is not going to cover it.

Maybe you should stop posting.

It's got nothing to do with being negative and everything to do with being realistic.

Comprehensive is almost All Risks cover.
Accidental damage is covered with decent Insurers.
Are you a registered FSP because if not don't give advice.

You would probably find your excess is higher than the damage unless you have excess insurance or similar.

But it's not accidental.

It's self inflicted.

And what is "almost" all risks cover?

Accidental.
You seem to know everything judging by your comment why ask me?
I've only been in the industry for 32yrs.

I've got nothing against being corrected and don't claim to know everything.

But the stance here seems that they say it's self-inflicted and if he admitted it then surely they are right to exclude it?

Just like suicide isn't covered my life insurance etc.

I can bet they would not cover it even if it wasn't your fault. Welcome to OUTsurance “where you always get nothing out".

Bit off topic, but like the Guy who broke his tailgate handle accidenilly

If i suffer a mechanical breakdown, while driving normally and nothing extreme,
Tried to fix it at any motor dealer independant and agent,
Both can't fix it,

Can i claim from insurance? To total loss my car?

Maybe its a silly question, if so I'm sorry,
But I'm considering all options here,

I mean technically my car isn't drivable, so its "totalled" .
