Comrades marathon starting positions

There are +12000 runners, is there any rules or criteria with regard to starting in front or middle or at back? Or they just line-up as they arrive to the starting positions and wait for the gun. Could starting right at the back hinder finishing faster as compared to when you could have started in front?

probably line up as you arrive, starting in front might suck consider all the people running over you.

I'm sure that ranked runners are put in the front of the "mob". After that its first come, first serve. You'll be running in a group regardless. Hmmm, starting at the back will also affect your time.

There are several groups A B C etc. and you are put in these groups depending on your qualifying marathon time.
