Problems with South Africa's biggest electric car charging network

South Africa's biggest electric vehicle (EV) charging network operator, GridCars, has played down issues with downtime, slower-than-advertised charging speeds, and the recent removal of a key station on a major intercity route.

GridCars operates over 400 EV charging stations in South Africa, making up the bulk of South Africa's public EV charging infrastructure.

All sounds like a kind of skullduggery mess.. Probably better and a whole lot cheaper to have a petrol car.. Mind you I suppose it might be clever to mount a diesel or petrol generator in their EV car boot for power..

/looks out the window by my desk in the middle of rural butt **** in netherlands. 6 working chargers in view in my quite street alone.

The Netherlands used to be a net-exporter of electricity. South Africa used to be, too. Now we are being coerced to import renewable nonsense and export our coal.
Netherlands are also now importing electricity because of the same.

Every place where cars are necessary.
Cars are never necessary, mankind has been walking very effectively for millenia.

As you charge at home 99.9% of the time, this is a non issue. It is like that one time in 7 years you show up at a petrol station and all the tanks are empty.
Or of course once a month on a Tuesday night. (In SA in any case)

What upgrades are needed to a domestic home's electrical system to charge 2 EVs?

Luckily there are numerous flatbed trucks which use highly efficient high-compression diesel engines to carry your EV.
There’s also the horse and carriage if we’re going to make those arguments… :)

Let me guess you also think we should be cooking on a fire outside and burning woman on stakes for being witches?

Honestly, why are those who can afford an EV and the cost of provisioning home-charging of said EV, driving to Durban?

no idea. maybe for the beach lol?

Its also why i think PHEV's need to be more focused on. They do bridge the "work-and-back" vs "long trip" gap quite well.. but they seem to be so scarce.

Problem is the secondhand market.
A pre-owned PHEV/EV, in my book, would be like buying a pre-owned "tested-working-never-OC'ed" mining-GPU, or a cellphone.

And what exactly is wrong with that?
It’s not 1774 that’s what’s wrong. We want technology, advancement, we should be planning off world colonies and space travel… food should be instant and producible in bulk through scientific means, etc etc . I want to be able to go from Johannesburg to New York in the time it takes me to read todays headlines…

Same with cars. We need them to move on from the combustion engine. It was good, we loved the noise. But in the name of progress its days should be very numbered.
