No I think you may be missing the point of my query -- what I want to do, for example, is simply run my DSTV decoder through my computer monitor when and if I want, instead of through the TV. The solution you propose is far too complex (and expensive) for this supposedly simple task.

The alternative is to buy another TV, but as I already have a perfectly good TV and a perfectly good computer monitor this would be a waste. So my query still stands, thanks!

Sounds like you need an AV to VGA adapter then

Audio will be a problem unless you plan on using some PC speakers

Yes thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for -- though now that I see the fairly high price just for a simple converter (R400 or more), then actually going for a cheap-and-cheerful media centre would give me more bang for my buck, perhaps?

How will you be able to watch DSTV through a media player? And the 2nd link is cheaper, they sell it for R350

YES. Why are you bothering with VGA when you have DVI?

A bit late in getting back. In the end we tried the DVI to HDMI and it works like a baws.

As to why we tried the VGA first, first time I've tried this and I usually learn these things by trial and error.

Er, why not? The basic DSTV decoder has the standard 3 x RCA AV outputs, and all media players I've seen have the matching AV inputs, surely?

Inputs or outputs?

If something has AV in, it's normally a TV, Amplifier or an Audio Video capture device. What media players support Audio Video capture?
